  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The writers strike has taken many TV shows off the air.

But political debate shows need to stay on the air,
for the political health of the country.

Even during the strike.

Real Time with Bill Maher needs to go back on as soon as possible.

The View needs to stay on the air.

The Daily Show needs to go back on the air.

Colbert debated political figures.

Aa the networks begin running out of material they will settle.

Many of these hosts like Colbert got their starts as writers and feel a natural solidarity with them. They won't go back on until the strike is settled.

How long will the strike last?

They are about 10 days from breaking the Hollywood strike record.

As long as it takes. The writers and actors know what this is going to take, and some of the smaller studios are willing to make a deal, but the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) is keeping them in line right now. What the writers and actors are asking for would be way cheaper than what the strike is costing the AMPTP right now.

They were on the air during the last strike.

I remember Conan doing stuff during the last strike.
It is more serious this time. Partly due to AI, and partly due to the changes in payment to writers and actors in the streaming environment.

I'll note that many of these shows still use writers, such as the Daily Show and Real Time. Real Time likely could go back on air, with a couple of format changes (dropping the comedy sketches in the episode, such as the "New Rules" that he often does), as others pointed out, Maher will be siding with the writers.

I think the biggest issue with most actual debate shows is they end up not being debates anymore. Both sides make outlandish claims, responses will often be whataboutisms and straw men, and they just try to talk over each other and drown the conversation in half truths and outright lies. Viewers often come out less informed than before the "debate" because all that will be "learned" is the lies and misrepresentations repeated by the side they prefer.

There are other avenues for these people to debate political issues on.
