  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Through our investigations, we have found that President Biden did lie to the American people about his own knowledge of his family's foreign business dealings. Eyewitnesses have testified that the president joined on multiple phone calls and had multiple interactions, dinners resulted in cars and millions of dollars into his sons and his son's business partners," McCarthy said.

What was the vote on this formal inquiry? I can't seem to find it.
From the link in the OP:

McCarthy spoke for only roughly three minutes and did not take questions from reporters. He made no mention of holding a floor vote before opening the impeachment inquiry, despite telling Breitbart earlier this month it would happen "through a vote on the floor of the People’s House and not through a declaration by one person."
"We know that bank records show that nearly $20 million in payments were directed to the Biden family members and associates through various Shell companies. The Treasury Department alone has more than 150 transactions involving the Biden family. Another business associates that were flagged as suspicious activity by U.S. banks. Even a trusted FBI informant has alleged a bribe to the Biden family. Biden used his official office to coordinate with Hunter Biden's business partners about Hunter's role in Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company," he continued.

Below are several questions to which I request a public response before the House of Representatives moves forward:
  • [#1] Do you intend to hold a vote of the full House authorizing your impeachment inquiry?
By answering "no" to any of the above, you would create a process completely devoid of any merit or
legitimacy.

Sincerely,
Kevin McCarthy
Republican Leader

McCarthy push for House to vote against impeachment is tabled again

Minority Leader used procedural tool to try to get members on the record before recess
McCarthy argued repeatedly this week that the full House should vote on whether or not to move ahead with the impeachment inquiry. He said constituents should be clear, as members return to their home states, where their elected representatives stand on the issue.

So we've got the hypocrisy covered, obviously. But let's just see if Jim and Comer can finally locate some evidence that can satisfy even their own party. There has to be a vote sometime if this is going to go any further. Although what they probably really want is a nice long 14 month investigation. No votes necessary (unless Biden wins again).

It would seem that Fox News is unaware how legislatures act, or hopes you won't notice. Legislatures do things officially by votes, no fiat. I bold/italicized the bit even Fox knew the lie in McCarthy's statement.

So will there be a vote on this or is that just a “formality” that can be dispensed with to “expedite” news stories?

Good question - I honestly do not know.

Lied to the American people? But every politician regularly lies to the American people. It's practically in the job description.
How does that old joke go?

"George Washington said I cannot tell a lie, starting a long rich tradition of presidents lying"

Senate Republicans say the House GOP doesn’t appear to have enough evidence to pursue impeachment proceedings against President Biden and are skeptical about the prospect of setting up an inquiry with multiple committees already investigating the president and his son, Hunter Biden.

Their message to House conservatives is simple: Don’t distract from the issues where Republicans will have the upper hand in the 2024 election — the economy and border security — to pursue a fruitless impeachment effort.

As if McCarthy had a choice in the matter as Matt Gaetz et al reminded him of the deal they made back in January 2023 that gave him his speakership, after endless voting.
In other words, the deal was to allow the crazy caucus the opportunity to impeach Biden, evidence be damned, or Kevin had to go.

Mr Gaetz apparently isn't impressed by McCarthy's "baby steps":

Mr. McCarthy scheduled his announcement hastily after Representative Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican and frequent critic of the speaker, gave word on Monday night that he would be giving a speech on the House floor attacking Mr. McCarthy and making the case for his ouster. Minutes after Mr. McCarthy spoke on Tuesday, Mr. Gaetz did just that, saying the speaker had reneged on promises he had made to right-wing lawmakers in return for their votes during his prolonged battle to win his post.

“I rise today to serve notice, Mr. Speaker, that you are out of compliance with the agreement that allowed you to assume this role,” Mr. Gaetz said, castigating Mr. McCarthy for cutting a spending deal with Mr. Biden this year to suspend the debt limit and failing to hold votes on term limits and a balanced-budget amendment. “The path forward for the House of Representatives is to either bring you into total, immediate compliance or remove you.”

He dismissed Mr. McCarthy’s talk of impeachment as “baby steps” that lacked a serious strategy, and urged Republicans to oppose a stopgap spending bill, known as a continuing resolution, needed to keep the government open past Sept. 30.
“If Kevin McCarthy puts a continuing resolution on the floor, it is going to be shot, chaser, continuing resolution, motion to vacate,” Mr. Gaetz said, referring to the procedural move to oust a speaker.

Mr. Gaetz told reporters on a telephone call that he intended to regularly force snap votes to remove Mr. McCarthy, threatening to make it part of the routine opening of every legislative day in the House: “the prayer, the pledge and the motion to vacate.”

The crazy thing is if Gaetz is successful in removing McCarthy. You have only about 10 more legislative days before the end of the fiscal year and no budget, meaning the government shuts down if no budget is approved in that time. And, if McCarthy is removed, I'm not sure what Republican can build a majority -- at least not without a moderate Republican getting enough Democratic votes and Republican votes to win the Speakership.

It would seem it would be very bad for the Republican Party if they lost their Speaker so couldn't pass a "budget" (actually a Continuing Resolution to fund the government) all because the most right wing of Republicans are upset McCarthy didn't work on impeachment hard enough, or quick enough, when there is no actual evidence of wrongdoing by the President. This seems like the kind of stunt that could cost Republicans the house in 2024 -- if they don't lose it just from forcing some moderate Republicans in "purple" districts into a Yes/No vote on impeachment.
