We'll see if his lawyers are able to strike a deal this time that a judge doesn't immediately regard as "toss-worthy".

I know this is a highly polarized subject (so some people have an inclination to really go after him, and others have an inclination to try to downplay things), but by any standard, that previous plea agreement was a joke.

Two serious tax violations and a felony gun charge, and the deal was no jail time, 2 years of probation (He has to hang out in a mansion and get a drug test every once in a while, or darn), and immunity from future federal charges.

There are people who get stiffer sentences for far less.

Probation is hardly a punishment if you have a baller mansion and a bunch of money in the bank.

I honestly don't know why that's ever a deal that's offered to people.

Typically, immunity deals don't cover future crimes (no cases that I'm aware of), only ones that you've already committed. However, I still see it as problematic.

I don't know if there's any unsolved crime or "flip a person on someone else" opportunity that justifies an immunity deal.

I feel the same way about "diplomatic immunity". Some of those cases are particularly infuriating.

I can see it with organized crime. If there is overwhelming evidence for a conviction of say a illegal drug sale; and the guy will accept a deal for that specific crime; if his testimony will convict the big guy; then I'm all for it. If later it turns up that the guy murdered someone; then that's another matter. Blanket immunity doesn't cut it.
