  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did Jesus claim to be God?

The Bible does not record where Jesus said: "I am God". However, he said in (NIV) John 10:
30 "I and the Father are one.”
Jesus claimed to be one with the Father.
31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”
33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
Jesus' opponents thought that Jesus claimed to be God.
34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods” ’?
Jesus didn't deny the claim.
35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside— 36what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?
More precisely, Jesus insisted that he was the Son of God.

Elsewhere in John 14:
8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

ESV John 8:58
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

There is strong evidence that Jesus implied that he was God but he had always preferred to label himself as the Son of Man and the Son of God.

John 14:28 You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.

Being one with God is not necessarily an ontological identity. Here in John, even though it is a later Gospel, Jesus states that the Father is greater than he. But the teaching has come to be co-eternal and equal.

Augustine of Hippo (AD 354–430), for example, states in his book on the Trinity: “In the form of a servant which he took he is the Father’s inferior; in the form of God in which he existed even before he took this other he is the Father’s equal.” Elsewhere, he says “the Father is greater than is the form of the servant, whereas the Son is his equal in the form of God.”

Who wrote the book of John? When Jesus was tempted who did Christ quote "it is written". Even Satan never once questioned who really wrote that he knew it was GOD's word. Satan even quoted the word of God.

So read the 1st Chapter of John that is your answer. He said who He was.

Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

The New King James Version (Jn 8:58). (1982). Thomas Nelson.
John 1: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

vs 4 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
