  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Last week Gary Arivett was arrested and is facing three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a family member under the age of 18. He has since been released after posting a $100,000 dollar bail.

The survivor says Arivett has been a pastor at Shiloh Apostolic Church in Henning for nearly 30 years. For her privacy, she does not want to be named, but says she and her sisters were abused for years.

“The fact that he is a pastor in a leadership position with access to as many young children with very trusting parents who aren’t aware of the monster they are allowing near there children, it needed to be public, it needs to get out there, they need to know,” said the survivor.

Why did you only post about a Pastor on a Christian site? There are many atheists that are in the same boat... but hey carry on
Should we ignore bad things done by people who preach about the wrongness of doing bad things?

Id like to introduce you to statistics. Lets start with the idea of per capita. There are more policeman than drag queens. There are a heck of a lot more policemen than drag queens who like to be around young children.
This one has been debunked…at least so far as pastors to drag queens.
Cops? I dunno.

There are some frequent posters here that I won't further name who will not waste an opportunity to take a news story about the misdeeds of a member of a powerless and marginalized group and try to portray that story as emblematic of the entire group.

It's very quick and easy to take one anecdote and use it to smear a larger group as being 'problematic'. I see that as a dishonest tactic because it doesn't bear out in the stats. It's simply ragebait and an attempt to throw some red meat. Abuse should be condemned regardless of whichever perceived camp it occurs in. But when it comes to messaging one side is at a disadvantage.

If there were parity in the threads about abuse there would be a thousand threads made about individual pastors, priests, members of clergy who have been arrested or convicted of child sexual abuse this year alone. The amount of work that would take is unreasonable. It would almost be a full time job to keep track of it all. A very very depressing job. You might think this is hyperbole but it's really not.

And so what happens is that for every story about sexual abuse in the LGBT community for example, only a small trickle of news stories about sexual abuse in the various church communities makes it through. And I'm thankful for diligent posters such as @essentialsaltes who keep track of things and revive threads with relevant updates.
