  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Christie on new Trump charges: ‘These guys were acting like the Corleones with no experience’

“It’s pretty brazen. These guys were acting like the Corleones with no experience. I mean, the day after a grand jury subpoena is served, which includes the surveillance tapes, they go down to Mar-a-Lago, and Walt Nauta appears to be the Fredo of this family. They sent him to go down there. And they sent him to go and delete it. This is bad stuff,” Christie continued.

Christie, a former Trump ally-turned-critic and now 2024 GOP contender, pushed back on the claim from fellow Republican challenger Vivek Ramaswamy that there was no underlying potential crime committed – and that this was simply an alleged “process crime.”

“You can’t say there was no underlying potential crime here. This was the withholding of confidential classified information from the government after 18 months of asking Donald Trump to return it voluntarily. Not only did he not return it, he lied about having it. This is not the kind of thing we could do,” Christie said.

I think the RNC strategists are missing the mark if they don't start promoting Christie more.

It would serve them well to go with someone who hasn't drank the Trump Kool-Aid, and that's also not afraid to call him out when applicable (as to where the rest of the candidates seemingly defend him, or in the case of DeSantis, stop short of actually calling him out)

Christie is clearly a good speaker, he has a measure of crossover appeal (the blue state of NJ seemed to like him enough to make him Gov), and would destroy Biden (or most any other person) on a debate stage.

Is the GOP making a blunder by not rallying more behind this guy?

If they didn't get him the last time, what makes them think they'll get him this time?
While I'm not holding my breath for them actually "getting him"...

I think what makes this one slightly different is that it sounds like he did something strikingly similar to the actions that prompted his supporters to chant "Lock her up" about his 2016 opponent.

If Hillary deleting emails warranted "locking her up and throwing away the key", it's going to be very hard to spin it to rationalize why him doing the exact same thing should be considered "no big deal".

On the irony/"Pot Calling Kettle black" -o- meter, this is one small step below if it was uncovered that Don Jr. was smoking crack and working for a foreign energy company.

I'm still wary of Christie due to the time he spent being a huge Trump supporter... after being highly critical of Trump. in the 2016 primaries. But I'd take Christie over Biden.

And yes, Trump does come across as a mafia boss wannabe sometimes. The image might fit, but he bungles it.

That same dynamic exists on the left as well...primaries can be more cut-throat intraparty, but most people support "the home team" when the generals come around.

For instance, AOC was clearly not a huge fan of Biden during the primaries, but when the generals came around, she still actively supported him against Trump.
(and Kamala Harris said some really bad stuff about Biden in the primaries, but changed her tune once he became the nominee)

That aside, I'd also take Christie over Biden.

I'm a big fan of "Blue State Republicans". To me, they present a "best of both worlds" scenario.
I like Christie
I liked Charlie Baker (the republican Gov of Mass)
I like Sununu (the republican Gov of NH)
I liked Bill Weld (another former Mass Gov)
I like Larry Hogan
etc...

To me, they provide a valuable look into "what do people in these regions really think about core issues when these other polarizing social issues are off the table?" There are some states that go blue every time in presidential elections, but consistently vote for Republican governors. That means there are some fiscally conservative/socially moderate people in the regions that republicans blindly assume "solid blue"

Could you expand upon "they" "get him" and "last time"?
Recently like a few weeks ago they were ready to basically put Trump in jail over the whole classified documents thing. I can't recall if they even made it to court but it was thrown out and Trump got off freely. FBI even issued an apology. This just sounds like they're doing the exact same thing again, only it's an even weaker case against him now. What could possibly happen to Trump now that the biggest hurdle has been overcome? It's a joke. They have nothing.

The judge on the "classified document thing" recently set a May trial date. A

What in the world are you talking about? Not only did the Judge just set the Florida part of the docs case for trial in May, but Jack Smith issued supplemental indictments for Donald, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira - you know, the stuff being discussed in the OP?
FBI even issued an apology.
This happened only in your imagination.

This is literally the same case, just more details.

I’ve long thought that Christie was the Tough Guy candidate that would-be Trump voters should’ve gone with, but more recently, I’ve come to the opinion that they’re not looking for a serious candidate who’s also a tough guy so much as they’re looking for a conman to feed their anxieties while robbing them blind. Like him or not, Christie is a serious candidate interested in doing what he considers to be a good job of being president. Trump is just a fraud. TrumpFans clearly want a fraud.

It'll be interesting to see if public opinion changes (on any of the candidates) after tonight's RNC debate.

It'll be hosted on Fox News (which is the station most of them watch, exclusively)

We'll also see if my theory is correct about Christie mopping the floor with everyone from a debate-prowess perspective. (although, he may run up against a little bit of a challenge with Vivek...who also seems to be a pretty good speaker)

Sure, if the GOP wasn't still firmly in support of Trump. But that would be foolish to do if they were, which they are.

They have a great case and a great track record. Federal indictments result in convictions 99.6% of the time.

They have a biased judge who has already been lambasted by being too lenient with Trump on a previous matter. A Trump appointee who will go as far as she feels she can safely go to protect him.

They have a terrible venue, the most pro-Trump jury pool on the country.

Will a pro-Trump judge and jury make Trump's case the .3% that results in a hung jury or even an acquittal?

I have no doubt he will be convicted in the other three indictments.
