  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The title is bad. He didn't just say he won. He actually won.

Braxton said in the lawsuit, which CBS News reviewed, that Newbern had not held an election "for decades." Instead, "the office of mayor was 'inherited' by a hand-picked successor," and that mayor then chose town council members, again without an election. All prior mayors have been White residents, the lawsuit said, even though about 85% of Newbern's population is Black. Only one Black person has ever served on the town council.
I guess you can't "try that in a small town," either.

Alabama town that hasn’t held elections in decades sued to allow voting

The town of Newbern saw white officials deny its first Black mayor, Patrick Braxton, from exercising his duties for three years

Braxton assumed office by default in 2020 when he filed for office and no one else, including the incumbent, did the same. Previous Newbern mayors had also been appointed or ran unopposed, with several of the officers serving in the position for more than 10 years. Many residents did not know they were allowed to have elections.

The LDF lawsuit builds on a previous one filed last year, which alleged that white officials had manipulated the political process for years to maintain their power in the majority Black town. The defendants, listed as former mayor Haywood “Woody” Stokes III and his town council, held a secret, special election, preventing Braxton from appointing his town council. During their special election, the previous town council re-elected themselves, and ultimately reappointed the previous town mayor.

The Black mayor of Newbern, Alabama will finally lead his town after being blocked from entering office by his white predecessors, pending a signature from a federal judge on a settlement agreement both parties reached last week.
The settlement declares Patrick Braxton as the “lawful mayor of Newbern,” and grants him all the powers, duties, privileges and “all other rights enjoyed by prior mayors and entrusted to the mayor of Newbern under Alabama state law.”

Under the agreement, the defendants in the case — previous mayor Haywood Stokes and his town council members — must immediately grant Braxton access to all official documents, accounts and town property needed to perform his job.
The next scheduled municipal election will take place in 2025, and Braxton will be up for reelection then.
