  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Disbelief as Swedish police allow Hebrew Bible to be burned outside Israeli embassy

The application, which was approved on Thursday, grants permission to a person “to express an opinion” in a public place.

I think it is terrible.

No news?

Jerusalem called on the Swedish government to stop the protests, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "The sacred books of all religions must be respected."

"I strongly condemn the decision of the authorities in Sweden to allow the burning of a Bible book in front of the Israeli embassy in the country," he said in a tweet. "The State of Israel takes very seriously this shameful decision that damages the Holy of Holies of the Jewish people."

Sweden: Muslim protester says he never wanted to burn Torah

After announcing his plans to burn the Torah and the Bible in Stockholm, the 32-year-old man said this was merely a stunt to draw attention to the limits of free speech.

Better!

And: Burning books is not a case of "freedom of speech".
It very much is.
It is an ugly Nazi action.
It’s also pointless. Burning books no longer has an appreciable impact on their availability especially in cases where people are burning ones they purchased for that purpose.

If the Swedish courts allowed the burning, then the stunt backfired. :)

Bookburning goes much further in the past than the nazis.
The Spanish Inquisition did it too

In Sweden. We still need to check close to 200 other countries.
Who’s we? I’m familiar with US law, I’ll leave it to those residing in the other countries to resolve the issue there if they feel a burning desire to find out.

Here in Belgium a far right politician, Alexandra Colen, wanted to burn newspapers for being 'too left'.
Though not illegal, the fire brigade advised against it for safety reasons. She ended with tearing them apart, which gave a pathetic view.

I’m sure the papers appreciated the extra sales.

I can't recall you complaining about the burning of the Quran earlier this month.

I think it is terrible.

It's an act of free speech (where I'm from), and it can be an offense to those who consider the writings sacred. Personally, if someone burns a Bible, I'm unphased. It's not an idol. I think Muslims who want blood because someone burned a Koran are going way overboard. Relax, please. If the writings were somehow endangered (there's only a few copies left), that might be different. I think we all should lament the loss of the Library of Alexandria and prevent similar situations.
