  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Historian Heather Cox Richardson weighs in on Substack, and it sounds as if the devil you don't know might be as bad as the devil you know.

Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin, the leader of the mercenary Wagner Group, has been increasingly critical of Russia’s military leaders over the past few months, and today he accused the Russian military of attacking his forces. He announced that he was leading his soldiers from Ukraine into Russia, where he promised to retaliate against the leaders of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

There are no good guys in this struggle. Prigozhin is wanted by the FBI for his involvement in the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He funded the Internet Research Agency (IRA), which flooded social media with messages designed to help Trump win the presidency, and his mercenaries have been committing war crimes in Ukraine and African countries, where they often support dictators. And Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes.
Russians have grown increasingly disenchanted with Putin as seven Russian soldiers die for every one Ukrainian soldier, and the costly war takes a toll on the nation,

A weakened Putin warns the nation that this potential coup could have an even costlier toll on the country.

What we can say with certainty is that this internal struggle shows that Putin’s hold over Russia is weak and that there are significant challenges to it before Russia’s next presidential election, which is supposed to be held on March 17, 2024. It is also certain that this internal fighting is a product of the war against Ukraine going badly for Russia and that it will hurt Russia’s war effort going forward.

As Yale professor Timothy Snyder put it: “wars end when the domestic political system is under pressure.”

Our country is taking a watch and wait position, not wanting to appear to favor one side or the other (truthfully, neither would be an ally of ours, although both Putin and Prigozhin seem to have been friendly with Trump.

Prayers for the Russian people, who are the real victims in this potential coup.

Prigozhin also said in Friday's video that the two goals Putin announced at the start of the war— the "demilitarization" and "de-Nazification" of Ukraine—were "pretty stories."

Instead, he blamed Shoigu, the defense ministry and a "clan of oligarchs" for starting the war. He accused Shoigu of seeking glory and wanting "to rob" Ukraine and divide up its assets.

I disagree.

Prigozhin want to boot out the leadership, especially that of the military. His actions have all but guaranteed Ukraine victory.

Russians have almost never had a democracy. I'm not sure why want to insist on that form of government for them. It is very likely that the people of Russia would be much better off without Putin. The new leader need not be a military man, just someone that the military will support, as is almost always the case in countries with autocratic rule.

I don't see Prigozhin going to war against the West. I see him consolidating.
=============
Trump's views seem irrelevant. He seems to like all dictators. In the end, I see Prigozhin as a practical dictator, or a supporter of a practical dictator. He should be congratulated by one and all, once Putin is gone.

Prigozhin funded cyberinterference in our 2016 election, and probably other countries' as well. His mercenaries are in Africa and Ukraine.
As I said, the devil we don't know could be worse than the devil we do know.

Are the Americans so gullible that they would fall for that?

Fall for disinformation distributed via social media?

Yes, Americans are that gullible. A lot of them anyway.
