  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

CNN —
Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, will plead guilty to three federal charges, the Justice Department said Tuesday in a court filing.

The plea deal will have immediate reverberations in the 2024 presidential election.

Hunter Biden will plead guilty to two federal tax misdemeanors and one charge tied to gun possession, according to the filing in a federal court in Delaware. He will appear in court to plead guilty to the charges at a future date.

This story is breaking and will be updated.

Still not voting for that guy. :|

"The plea deal will have immediate reverberations in the 2024 presidential election."

Right, one party has a front-runner who is under indictment for literal espionage and may even be found guilty and sentenced to prison before the election and the other has a son who has never ran for any office who missed some tax payments and technically shouldn't have had a gun many years ago.

I was off on my Feb prediction:

"I'm going to keep this for posterity, but here is my Hunter Biden prediction. He is under investigation for unpaid taxes and maybe not registering as a foreign agent. Like most Americans who are not abusing the tax system, nothing more is done outside of repayment of unpaid taxes and a fine. Hunter has already paid both. Then there is the gun. Lying on a gun permit is rarely charged. The FARA situation may be different if he like Flynn and Manafort failed to register as a foreign agent. The penalty for that is a 250k fine and the possibility of 5 years in jail. Trump associate Elliot Broidy pleaded guilty of not registering, and had to pay a fine and was then pardoned by Trump. So guess what's going to happen if Hunter pleads guilty or is found guilty? What is Joe going to do? I can just hear the heads exploding now.
The heads however will explode when Joe pardons Hunter.

Good, maybe we'll stopping hearing constantly about him.

Hunter will also avoid potential charges of improper lobbying for foreign interests in connection with his work on the board of Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma Holdings. That is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee. . .

Former President Donald Trump, meanwhile, was quick to weigh in, posting on Truth Social: “The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere ‘traffic ticket.’ Our system is BROKEN!”

One would think with all the "talking himself deeper hole in a hole" Trump did on FOX last night, he would take a pause.
But no, he's complaining about Hunter receiving a normal plea deal for not paying taxes, after he long ago paid the back taxes replete with fines.

Oh he's already paid the fines and back taxes. Then he's likely to only get probation. The US doesn't typically jail tax cheats, especially ones that comply and pay their fines. (It's a tax system, what they want is the cash.)

The gun charge (which is an odd duck anyway, "drug addict in possession of a gun" doesn't really feel like it should be a federal crime, but anyway) is noted in this letter to the court's clerk:

https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ded.82797/gov.uscourts.ded.82797.1.0_7.pdf

as requiring a "Pretrial Diversion Agreement" which sounds like a program wherein if he keeps of drugs for X years they won't bring him before a judge and ask for a jail sentence.

Overall (and we have to wait for the plea agreement and then the actual judge to sentence), it sounds like he's paying his tax fines, goes on a few years probation with anti-drug restrictions and likely no actual jail time.

Yes, and this regarding Delaware DOJ's past history of pursuing those who lied on a gun permit when an addict:

"The data released by the Justice Department does not show how many people might have been prosecuted for falsely answering the question about active drug use. But a review of such cases in Delaware, also provided to The Fact Checker, shows that in fiscal 2019, only three Form 4473 cases were referred for prosecution in the state — and the U.S. attorney opted not to bring them."

It is odd that he blasts the DoJ for exchanging the not registering as a Foreign Agent charge against Hunter, but was completely silent when they did the same for Gen. Flynn -- who he pardoned (for lying to the FBI) despite having to fire him from his administration for his illegal acts.

It's almost like Trump has a double standard when it comes to justice, but I'm sure I'll be told that can't be true.

I wonder if republicans can be satisfied how President Biden didn't interfere with DOJ and let justice be done. What a stark contrast between this administration and the previous "acting" administration.

The US Attorney for the District of Delaware (the responsible prosecutor in this case, who makes the charging decisions) was appointed by Donald Trump in early 2018. The Biden transition asked him to stay on rather than make the customary resignation at the beginning of the new president's term to avoid the prospect of a Biden appointed USA making the decision to charge or not charge Biden's son.

Has to be a rhetorical question. The fact Trump won a special counsel in Mueller because he wanted Comey to protect Mike Flynn, which was something that AG Bill Barr did immediately for Trump once in power .

The president will just pardon him anyway.
When Joe ceases to be President and Hunter is still unpardoned will we see a retraction?

I don't think he will pardon his son unless he loses reelection, then, maybe, as a departing gesture.

As it stands, I don't think he will pardon him as Hunter isn't in real jeopardy and the Democrats have become by default the law abiding party.
