  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If someone is taking a short break from church for personal reasons is that a bad thing?

Can you elaborate a bit on your question? Are you asking whether it's okay for you to take a break from church, or are you asking how to judge someone else who is taking a break from church? And, is the "personal reason" something like health or lack of transportation, or is it some kind of conflict between the person and the church? I would address these situations differently, depending on what's going on.

In general, it's good for us to be in community with other Christians, and it's good to receive Communion frequently. But I know that things happen in life that interfere with our ability to be in Christian community.

It is kind of like scheduled family gatherings. They are supposed to be feel good times and celebrations. People should feel happy and delighted to see each other again. If they don't, if it feels like a chore and a dreaded burden, then why bother? If you have to miss church for some personal reason and really miss going... then you do what you have to do. But if you feel a sense of relief and are glad... then there is something wrong.
