  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Question about the Popes

I have a question - not intending to be an argument, nor criticism. Just seeking information from Catholics.

Has there ever been a Pope who resigned from the Catholic faith, to no longer be a Catholic ?

Or left Christianity ? Or left and chose another religion?

Thanks for any information.

Nope, of the 266 popes we've had so far most of their reigns ended with their deaths, with a few exceptions largely outside of their control. No pope has ever renounced the faith though.

The closest thing I can think of is Pope Marcellinus (pope from around 296 to 304), who may have temporarily renounced Christianity and offered incense to idols under threat of persecution, but the evidence is not definite, and even if it did happen it appears to have been only temporary and under duress.

Not that I'm aware of, although some of them led very immoral lives not worthy to be called Christian. Think of Benedict IX who was elected Pope THREE times and had...err...multiple lovers and other scandals.
