  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Possibility of 'popular revolt' about gun control, Sen. Chris Murphy says

This would be hilariously amusing, if it weren't for the fact that he's deadly serious. :D If the Supreme Court doesn't impose gun control measures, there will be a "popular revolt" against the policy by the people demanding more gun control.

Really? And what, exactly, are they going to revolt *WITH*? Rainbow banners? My Little Pony wands? Silk flags with pictures of David Hogg and Beto O'Rourke on them? These are the people who hate guns, remember, so they obviously won't be using firearms for their "revolt".

Who do you think would have the better chance of a successful "revolt"? People who look like this:

Or people who look like this?

Keep in mind a majority of Americans want gun reform; this includes most gun owners and veterans. You would likely see people from both examples participating in a revolt if it were ever to come to that.

Well, I'm a gun owner and veteran; and yes, I want gun reform. I want it mandated that every American schoolchild, girls and boys both, at age seven, begins one hour of firearms training every day, five days a week. Start out with air rifles; progress to BB guns; then .22 rifles. By the time the kid is a senior in high school, he or she should be able to accurately fire, field strip, maintain, and handle safely, 90% of the available rifles, shotguns, crossbows, pistols (both semiauto and revolvers) and when they graduate, they should be issued a certificate of firearms training and competence, and should be required, by law, to carry a government-issued handgun at all times.

People could opt out of carrying, if they so desired, due to religious objections or so on, but not the training. One of the reasons we have so many firearm deaths due to accidents is because people are ignorant of how guns operate. Every citizen in this country should know how to handle a weapon properly and competently; anything less places our freedoms and liberties into the hands of others, who may or may not have our best interests at heart. Where the people fear criminals, there is anarchy; where the people fear the government, there is tyranny; where the criminals and the government fear the people, there is order and liberty.

That's my solution. It's obvious that gun control doesn't work. Disarming good people doesn't work. Placing people in zones where bad guys with guns aren't supposed to be doesn't work. So: arm everybody. If 40 people are inside a bank and they are all armed, when a criminal comes in and attempts a robbery, he will never leave the premises alive. If a criminal decides to shoot up a school and discovers that the principal, the teachers, the custodians, the lunch ladies, and the visiting parents are all packing heat and know how to use it, he will probably change his mind. If he doesn't, he'll be pushing up daisies before he can do much damage.

Criminal control, not gun control.

After nearly a decade in the military and a further twenty years in law enforcement, I am quite familiar with what a gunshot wound looks like. I am also familiar with what they  smell like, which is infinitely worse. And a body that's been dead for a while is even worse yet.

But, yes: I think that a demonstration of ballistic damage should be a part of the training, absolutely. It wouldn't necessarily have to involve actual animal tissue; these days there are plenty of synthetic substitutes that would get the point across quite satisfactorily.

Im too angry about you wanting to arm everyone. Guess I'll be spending more time in the ER from your proposal. I get to deal with the fallout of hospital staff from situations like this. You try dealing with a Pediatric ICU staff after a 4 year old succumbs to her GSW.

People should see the REAL long-term effects that guns do to the human body, not some facsimile. Then let them decide.

Methinks your wrath is misplaced.

Are you able to understand that the same argument can be made against automobiles because of the carnage caused by people who drink drive?
I read just this morning that the vast majority of automobile-related deaths occur in Chevrolet Silverados and Ford F-150s. But I don't see any foaming-at-the-mouth, irrational, seething wrath directed at pickup trucks......or at medical mishaps, which outnumber gun deaths by 500 to 1.
