  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Presuming that you are a Christian and considering saint Paul's reflections on Judaism in Romans chapter three the question arises, "given that you are a Christian do you want to be a Jew?"

Romans 3:
1 Of what use is it, then, to be a Jew? What value was there in circumcision?
2 Much, I answer, in every respect; chiefly because the Jews had the words of God entrusted to them.
3 Some, to be sure, shewed unfaithfulness on their side; but can we suppose that unfaithfulness on their part will dispense God from his promise? It is not to be thought of;
4 God must prove true to his word, though all men should play him false; so it is written, Thy dealings were just, and if thou art called in question, thou hast right on thy side.✻
Ps. 50.4.
5 Thus our fault only serves to bring God’s integrity to light. (Does that mean that God does wrong in punishing us for it?
6 Impossible again, even according to our human standards; that would mean that God has no right to judge the world;
7 it would mean that because my deceitfulness has promoted God’s glory by giving scope to his truthfulness, I on my side do not deserve to be condemned as a sinner.
8 If so, why should we not do evil so that good may come of it? That is what we are accused of preaching by some of our detractors; and their condemnation of it is just.)
9 Well then, has either side the advantage? In no way. Jews and Gentiles, as we have before alleged, are alike convicted of sin.✻
‘Has either side the advantage?’; the Greek word here may mean ‘Do we excel them?’ or ‘Are we excelled by them?’ Nor are commentators agreed whether ‘we’ refers to the Jews or to the Gentiles. But the general sense remains clear.
10 Thus, it is written, There is not an innocent man among them, no, not one.
11 There is nobody who reflects, and searches for God;
12 all alike are on the wrong course, all are wasted lives; not one of them acts honourably, no, not one.✻
vv. 10-12: Ps. 13.2, 3.
13 Their mouths are gaping tombs, they use their tongues to flatter. Under their lips the venom of asps is hidden.✻
Ps. 5.10; Ps. 139.3.
14 Their talk overflows with curses and calumny.✻
Ps. 9 (second part), 7.
15 They run hot-foot to shed blood;
16 havoc and ruin follow in their path;✻
vv. 15-17: Is. 59.7, 8.
17 the way of peace is unknown to them.
18 They do not keep the fear of God before their eyes.✻
Ps. 35.1.
19 So the law says, and we know that the words of the law are meant for the law’s own subjects; it is determined that no one shall have anything to say for himself, that the whole world shall own itself liable to God’s judgements.✻
‘The law’ seems to be used here, as often, for the Old Testament generally.
20 No human creature can become acceptable in his sight by observing the law; what the law does is to give us the full consciousness of sin.

Presuming that you are a Christian and offering saint Paul's reflections of Judaism in Romans chapter three the question arises, "given that you are a Christian do you want to be a Jew?"

Rom 2 - Paul says this
26 Therefore, if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27 And will not the physically uncircumcised, if he fulfills the law, judge you who, even with your written code and circumcision, are a transgressor of the law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.

Yes - we all want to be that kind of Rom 2 "Jew" as we see above.

Rom 9 says this

6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, 7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.” 8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son.”

Yes we all want to be that kind of Israel.

Heb 8 says this

He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Yes we all want to be that "house of Israel"
Romans 3:

Amen!

Some think that Christ came to start his own religion that is distinct from Judaism, but the reality is that he came as the Messiah of Judaism in fulfillment of Jewish prophecy and he spent his ministry teaching people how to correctly practice Judaism in obedience to the Torah. In Acts 21:20, they were rejoicing that tens of thousands of Jews were coming to faith who were all zealous for the Torah, which is the way to believe in what Jesus accomplished through the cross (Titus 2:14), so Jews coming to faith in Jesus were not ceasing to practice Judaism. This means that there was a period of time between the resurrection of Jesus and the inclusion of Gentiles in Acts 10 that is estimated to be around 7-15 years during which all Christians were Torah observant Jews, so Christianity at its origin was the form of Judaism that recognized Jesus as its prophesied Messiah. Gentiles do not need to become Jews in order to become members of Judaism, but Gentiles can't follow Jesus by refusing to follow the religion that he followed.

There are different roles within the the body of Messiah just as just as there are different roles within our physical bodies, but all of the roles are important, so we should not feel like we are inferior if we don't have a certain role. In Isaiah 45:17, it says that all Israel shall be saved, which I think is the source of the mistaken belief that all someone needed to do to become saved it by going through the the process of becoming a Jew, which requires circumcision. In 1 Corinthians 7:17-24, Paul said that we should stay as we are called, which I think was in response to this pressure that was being placed on Gentiles to become Jews, so Gentiles should not seek to become Jews in order to become saved, but I think that still allows room for Gentiles who feel called to become Jews, but not in order to become saved. Even today, Jews will not just given lip serve to talking Gentiles out of becoming Jews, but will try their hardest to talk them out of it, and will only allow Gentiles to become Jews who still show determination after showing a proper understanding of what it means to become a Jew and being warned about all that comes with it, including their potential loss of their place in the World to Come.

Luke 16:16 (NIV)
The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it.

The signicance of the above verse is that, the Law and Prophets are no longer proclaimed to the gentiles since John the Baptist. Lawfully/legally this could mean that no more convert will be accepted. as converting to Judaism won't save humans. This means only the Jews by bloodline can be a Jew after the circumcision, and choosing to adapt Judaism. A gentile is not a Jew even when he chooses to be circumcised.

This means only the Jews by bloodline can be a Jew after the circumcision, and choosing to adapt Judaism. A gentile is not a Jew even when he chooses to be circumcised.
In Matthew 4:15-23, Jesus began his ministry with the Gospel message to repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand, which was a light to the Gentiles, and the Law of God was how his audience knew what sin is (Romans 3:20), so repenting from our disobedience to it is a central part of the Gospel of the Kingdom, which he prophesied would be proclaimed to all nations (Matthew 24:12-14), which he commissioned his disciples to teach to the nations (Matthew 28:16-20), which is in accordance with Jesus being sent as the fulfillment of the promise to bless us by turning us from our wickedness (Acts 3:25-26), which is the Gospel that was made known in advance to Abraham in accordance with the promise (Galatians 3:8), and which he taught to Gentiles living in Haran in accordance with the promise (Genesis 12:1-5).

So in Luke 16:16, when Jesus said that since that time the Gospel of the Kingdom is being preached, he was not saying that the Law and Prophets are no longer proclaimed to the Gentiles, but rather he was saying that they are still being proclaimed. Furthermore, in Luke 16:17, Jesus said that it would be easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the least part to pass away from the law, so was not speaking about something that had ended with John, and in Luke 16:18, Jesus continued to teach how to obey the Law of God. In addition, neither John nor Jesus taught that people needed to stop repenting because the Law and the Prophets had ended, but just the opposite.
