Surveillance video led to arrest in H-E-B parking lot shooting of teen cheerleader
Court documents reveal that the man accused of shooting a Round Rock teen cheerleader at an H-E-B parking lot in Elgin was identified using surveillance footagecbsaustin.com
The CNN article in the OP has more details that explain how this happened:This wasn't a shooting because they tried getting into the wrong car.
The article you provided states that the shots were fired INTO the cheerleaders own vehicle while they were inside.
"The incident took place around 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday. April 18, when a group of cheerleaders returned from a practice in Houston. An altercation between two groups led to shots being fired into the cheerleaders' vehicle."
Girl gets out of Car 1 and opens the door to Car 2, thinking it's hers. Man gets out of Car 2 and starts shooting at Girl and other occupants of Car 1. Girl jumps back in Car 1 and they drive away. Therefore "an altercation led to shots being fired into the cheerleaders' vehicle."The latter girl had gotten out of a friend’s car and opened the door to a vehicle she thought was hers, only to find a man sitting in the passenger seat, she said during a livestreamed prayer vigil Tuesday night at her cheer team’s gym, CNN affiliate KTRK reported.
Heather Roth said she was trying to apologize to the man when he got out of the passenger door.
“He just threw his hands up, and then he pulled out a gun and he just started shooting at all of us,” Roth said, fighting tears.
Lynne Shearer, managing partner of the Woodlands Elite Cheer Company, told CNN that Roth and fellow cheerleader Payton Washington fled immediately in their car.
If only there had been a good guy with a gun to prevent this. Oh well, thoughts and prayers.Yet another shooting for being in the wrong place / opening the wrong door.

As Christian, you should be able to recognize the signs of the times. My God what's happening to us...
Time to bring charges against the MRI machine!Just remember, despite every one of these incidents involving a gun, the problem isn't guns.
