"Once the balloon was detected, the U.S. government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information."

The three officials said China could have gathered much more intelligence from sensitive sites if not for the administration’s efforts to move around potential targets and obscure the balloon’s ability to pick up their electronic signals by stopping them from broadcasting or emitting signals.
So, no lies were told.

It says that the government acted to protect the information. Which it did. That doesn't mean the protection was completely successful. It's doubtful that the Chinese collected much of anything useful. You don't carry on sensitive activities while a spy balloon (or satellite) is flying overhead. We're always emitting signals, sensitive or not, so the balloon collected something.

That's baloney. We now know the U.S. tracked the balloon before it entered U.S. airspace, Joe had multiple opportunities to shoot it down. WHAT YOU DONT DO IS LET A LARGE SPY BALLOON ENTER US AIR SPACE AND FLY ACROSS OUR COUNTRY! Joe and the Pentagon were negligent enough to allow the spy balloon to go over multiple sensitive sights but we should ASSUME that all sensitive actions were immediately and properly shut down at all of these sites?

That's standard procedure. It's what we do for spy satellites. We know where the spy satellites are, we track them, we prepare for them. I've worked in sensitive operations in the Air Force. It's nothing unusual.

Spy satellites can be in constant orbit of the U.S., you can't shut down every operation forever. And we don't know what kind of sophisticated sensors were on the balloon, it would be folly to assume that only SIGINT was being collected.

Sure, they could be collecting images. Infrared, radar, etc. They have perfectly good satellites for that kind of thing, though.

You do when you get such a chance to study a foreign intelligence collector.

Probably SIGINT--that can be determined by studying the external antenna themselves, which the US did do.

Of course, there is also IMINT, MASINT, ACCOUSTINT, COMINT, TELINT, and a numer of other "-INTs" that are possibilities. We block what we deem as sensitive and study the collector to gain PHOTINT (which is not the same thing as IMINT), OPTINT (also not the same thing as IMINT) and counter-SIGINT

So once again we find out the Biden administration lied to the American people.
In this age, lying to the people is a matter of policy. They do knowingly and intentionally. They think we cannot handle the truth. They hide things under the pretense of "national security." It is in the job description of virtually every government Job and office. "Be ready to lie if needed to preserve the narrative and keep the common man ignorant and complacent."
And like I said, they do this knowingly and intentionally. I would not be surprised if they have meetings on what lie to tell that will be most convincing and easily swallowed.

Perhaps Administration* officials simply don’t think that Internet forum dwellers have a “need to know” what is going on at a given point while they’re doing administration-business?

*any administration

Too many secrets. Much of is just hiding inconvenient facts. I am for complete transparency, regardless of the platform. Internet forum dwellers are citizens and they have rights, and that includes the right to NOT be lied to by their government.
"Administration business" is the people's business. If it is not, they have no business doing it.

Yes, it's sad. When was the last time a government official was prosecuted for lying under oath?

Maybe I'm just a moronic Neanderthal here, but what intel exactly could a spy balloon obtain that a spy satellite could not?
A balloon is a lot cheaper than putting a satellite in orbit, and it can hover over a target for a while. It has the obvious drawback of giving spy tech to the enemy though, since it's likely to be shot down.

A balloon has no advantage over a spy satellite if a nation can put up enough spy satellites, particularly for ELINT and SIGINT.

In addition, Chinese agents on the ground have the freedom of movement to collect much more information virtually anywhere in the US than American agents can collect in China.

This is true. Any foreign agent from any nation can just waltz across the southern border and and set up a spy shop outside of any military or civilian installation they want. Probably file for federal aid while they are at it. Insanity.

Foreign intelligence agents buy airline tickets.
