A new video of world-renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli singing “Amazing Grace” to fans in New York City’s Times Square has attracted more than one million views.

Bocelli, a Catholic, delivered his performance on March 23 as part of the official launch for the movie “The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli,” which hits select theaters during Holy Week, April 2-9. He later shared a video of the performance on his Facebook page.

Why ‘Amazing Grace’ was chosen

His wife and executive producer of the upcoming film, Veronica Berti Bocelli, shared why “Amazing Grace” was chosen for the launch with Our Sunday Visitor.

The song “is a classic of the musical tradition worldwide, it is one of the most engaging songs of all time: a timeless prayer, composed in the 18th century but which is still able to speak to the hearts of all of us today, with unchanged intensity and emotion,” Veronica, who is also Catholic, said.

The worst kind of heretic is the one who, while teaching mostly true Catholic doctrine, adds a word of heresy, like a drop of poison in a cup of water.

Attr. Pope Leo XIII.
I no don’t see an issue with Amazing Grace. But I’m a convert.

"Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed"

God's grace isn't dependent upon an act of belief from us. It is a free gift.

‘Twas grace: The Holy Spirit, being drawn to God and accepting the invitation.

How precious, etc: I understand it as an ex-Protestant. It’s taken as when you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

God knows the heart. Nitpicking a song such as Amazing Grace is fruitless imo. My parish sings it. If you have issues with it then don’t sing it.

Many parishes sing it. And as you suggested, I don't sing it. Our hymns should be in line with our beliefs.

I don’t think it is out of line with our beliefs. But whatever. So much for posting an edifying thread I guess.

I get it.

But I would also object if a song came along: "O Mary is sinful" instead of "Immaculate Mary".
Not even close. Lol But I understand where you are coming from.

I don't see the problem.

The Lord pours graces on us without stop.
He is in US therefore; His grace is with us. Yes, it is His gift. But that said; we ought to cooperate.

People have sudden revelations in which they open up to the graces. That is what the song is about.
The moment we open up to the graces.
Otherwise; conversion wouldn't exist.
Also too, the Lord allows free will to cooperate with His gift.

God's grace isn't dependent upon an act of belief from us. It is a free gift.
I've never interpreted the song to mean that.

Grace appears precious the hour we first believe because we recognize that it's grace that has brought us to faith, and it's faith that allows us to recognize grace. So yes, the hour we first believe, grace would indeed appear precious to us. It's the first moment we recognize it.

A person can make anything heretical by misinterpretation. That doesn't mean it is.

It's called grammar.
You're interpreting it as grace "appeared" when faith occured.

The word "appear" has more than one definition. If we want to talk grammar.

It can mean "to come into existence." That's how you're interpreting the phrase. That's the 6th definition Merriam Webster has for the word.

It can also mean "to become evident or manifest." That's how I'm interpreting the phrase. That grace becomes evident to the person who experiences conversion. They can now understand. That's why they were once "blind" but now they "see." They were blind to grace before, now they can understand its role in their faith. That's the 4th defintion Merriam Webster has for the word.

You don't have the market cornered on grammar. So you can ^_^ at me all you want. At least I don't have to find a reason to knock down a song that is beloved by Christians all over the world based upon a faulty understanding of what the song is saying.

I don't see that line as meaning what you think it means, or that it's reasonable to think that it means that the author thinks that grace is dependent on our act of belief. I see the grammar as indicating the subjective change in how I saw things after I responded positively to the grace that God was giving me and began to turn away from sin and toward God.

In any case, Bocelli is a rare talent.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. In my opinion, I think you are incorrect (not about Bocelli)
