Matthew 2:9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.

Do we know what is that star? In astronomy. Is it a true star?

There's a couple of articles here from a Catholic viewpoint on the star of Bethlehem.

So what exactly was the star? In a nutshell, we don't know.

We don't who Luke was for example. All we know is that he was supposed to be a doctor, possible non-Jewish, obviously he met and knew Paul, and he used a more educated level of Greek writing than other gospel writers.

But apart from that we know hardly anything about him.

I remember our archbishop saying at a Bible study session some years ago that "scholars have spilled oceans of ink" trying to pin down who Luke was. He said in the end He thought God didn't care as He wanted our mind on Christ, not on complete biographies of the authors of the Gospels.

I think the same thing could be said about the star. Christ is our focus - not a mysterious sign that was supposed to have guided a bunch of magi to Jerusalem and then on to Bethlehem.
