I heard about this just now too. It is very sad, but not impossible to imagine happening given his age and health problems :(
I had a feeling a couple days ago that we'd see a headline like this very soon.

Former Pope Benedict XVI dies at 95

Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at his Vatican residence, aged 95, almost a decade after he stood down because of ailing health.

He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years until, in 2013, he became the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.

Benedict spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican.

His successor Pope Francis said he had visited him there frequently.

The Vatican said in a statement: "With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican.

"Further information will be provided as soon as possible."

And now - let's not forget this age-old wisdom: De mortuis nil nisi bonum

The Latin phrase mortuis nihil nisi bonum (also De mortuis nil nisi bene [dicendum]) "Of the dead, [say] nothing but good", abbreviated as Nil nisi bonum, is a mortuary aphorism, indicating that it is socially inappropriate to speak ill of the dead as they are unable to justify themselves.

The full sentence (De mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est) translates to "Of the dead nothing but good is to be said". Freer translations into English are often used as aphorisms, these include: "Speak no ill of the dead", "Of the dead, speak no evil", and "Do not speak ill of the dead".

Chilon of Sparta coined the phrase τὸν τεθνηκóτα μὴ κακολογεῖν — "Of the dead man do not speak ill".

It was in the news a copule of days ago that he was very ill, so I was expecting this to happen in the near future.

When you're 95 as he was and in ill health, the chances are that time is running out, just as it was for Prince Philip (99) and Queen Elizabeth (96).

It can hardly have taken anybody by surprise.

I suppose I can say "Requiescet in pace" as kind of salutation, but the reality is that he's probably more alive now than he's ever been.

Bruni later told journalists that Benedict XVI received the sacrament of the anointing of the sick on Dec. 28, in the presence of the consecrated women who helped run his household.

The Vatican announced Saturday that the funeral Mass of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will take place on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, in St. Peter’s Square.

Pope Francis will preside over the funeral, which, in keeping with Benedict’s wishes, “will be carried out under the sign of simplicity,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said.

I loved Pope John Paul II, and like many converts, affirm that he was a powerful influence in my life and my conversion to the Catholic faith, but standing right behind John Paul was the gentle, strong presence of Joseph Ratzinger. He was, if you like, the rock beside the Rock that was Peter’s successor John Paul.

Now, on the morning of his death I have reason to recall my own feelings about him and his ministry.

I only met him once. I was in Rome for a conference and on a winter morning I made my way to St Peter’s to attend an early Mass. As I was making my way across a frosty St Peter’s Square I spotted the famous Ratzinger wearing a dapper overcoat over his cassock, carrying a briefcase and topped with a neat black beret. I caught his eye and nodded a good morning. He smiled and nodded his greeting back.

How will things go on now?

A pope’s death customarily sets in motion a conclave to choose a new leader of the church. But Benedict’s successor, Pope Francis, was named when Benedict stepped down in 2013.

Now, a sitting pope is expected to preside over the funeral of his predecessor — an extraordinary spectacle in the history of the church. The Vatican said on Saturday that Benedict’s funeral would be held on Thursday in St. Peter’s Square, with Francis presiding.

As is traditional, Benedict’s body will be laid in St. Peter’s Basilica on Monday so that the faithful can file by to pay their respects.

He was a pope who always drew ardent loyalists, as well as strong detractors.
