You should do some more research on the original Hebrew she'ol and original Greek  hades Which in English translate to hell.
In the Hebrew, there are different meanings for the word depending on the context it is used, one such being "abyss". It's very interesting.

Did you know that there are 29 references to the term "realm of the dead" in the NIV translation? Two of them are in the 2nd chapter of Acts and one is in Ecclesiastes 9. (the famous "dead know nothing" chapter)
