Merrick Garland’s decision Friday to appoint a special counsel in the criminal investigations of Donald Trump is almost certainly a mistake, as such appointments usually are. This won’t offer the Attorney General the political insulation he is seeking, and it won’t change the inherently political nature of any decision to prosecute.

If Garland doesn't appoint the special counsel, he's persecuting Trump politically. If he appoints the special counsel he's passing the buck.

Trump will likely pay the recompense for his behavior regardless of who prosecutes these allegations.

I'm more curious if the GOP will allow Trump to force himself on them again and back his run for president.
