Elon Musk begins reinstating banned Twitter accounts

The decision comes after widespread resignations among the platform’s critical IT staff.

Elon Musk, owner and CEO of Twitter, has begun reinstating accounts that were previously subject to lifetime bans for breaking the platform's rules.

Announced Friday, the first reinstated accounts belong to author Jordan Peterson, comedian Kathy Griffin, and conservative parody outlet The Babylon Bee.

"The new Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom to reach" the public, explained Elon Musk on his Twitter account.

"Negative or hateful tweets will be demoted and demonetized, so there will be no back-to-back ads or other revenue for Twitter. You won't find these tweets unless you specifically look for them, which is no different than the rest of the internet," he added.

Thoughts?

I would say that there should also be a push to reinstate some accounts that were banned for "vaccine hesitancy".

As much as I go hard on the actual anti-vaxxers, there were some who got that label, and were banned, for topics surrounding aspects of it that NBC and Washington Post are running articles about now that everyone has let their "covid politics" guard down a little.

At 01:45 GMT, 59.6 percent of the nearly two million responses were in favor of a return of the former president, who was banned from Twitter for his role in last year's attack on the US Capitol by a mob seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

There was no indication that the mercurial boss of Space-X and Tesla would adhere to the results of the ad hoc poll.

But on Friday, he also posted a Latin adage suggesting that the decision would be up to Twitter users: "Vox Populi, Vox Dei" ("The voice of the people is the voice of God").

Trump has been reinstated. He hasn't tweeted yet. Previously he indicated he would remain loyal to the Truth. Truth Social that is.

If you have followed this then you know that's not the issue. No matter who owned this company this was coming. There was far too much money being spent on many things including the number of employees. It was going to have to happen. It was a necessary business decision. Like I said, it was going to happen no matter who owned the company.

But let's be realistic here, what exactly was their best-case, real-world assessment they had in mind for what was going to happen?

Given that their layoffs came at the same time as both Meta and Amazon, did they think there wouldn't be mass layoffs if someone else was running it?

Did the Twitter employees envision some "perfect world" scenario in which they complained loudly enough, Elon said "well, gee shucks, I guess I'll give the company to someone else who shares the political values of the employees" or "well, since they're really upset and like the creature comforts they had, I guess I'll just operate it at a loss so that we can keep the bloated staffing headcounts and let the inmates keep running the asylum"

One could make a fair argument that some of the implied expectations of excessive work hours (regular 60+ hour weeks with no additional compensation), and a new owner coming in like a Bull in a China shop may not be the best approach...but that doesn't mean the previous arrangement was a healthy balance either.

...and I hate to be "that guy", but given the most common age ranges listed for Twitter staff

It would seem as if they had some sort of expectation that their place of work should mirror that of a social club, where shared values about things not related to the business itself should be viewed as equally important to the business operations. Over half of Twitter's staff was in the "Safe space generation" which could explain a lot.

First he fired people based on the amount of code they'd written. There are some obvious problems with this approach. For example, more efficient code is shorter code, so on a like for like basis, a better coder would write less code. Another problem would be that, if a person's job was to correct code that was written by someone else, they wouldn't have written much code at all.

Not surprisingly, he tried to re-hire some of them when he realised he'd made a novice, schoolboy mistake.

He then gave the remaining staff an option; work much harder for the same pay or he'll pay them to leave.

Not surprisingly, most of the remaining staff chose to take the payment.

The least a person could expect of their employer is that they know what they are doing. He has demonstrated that he doesn't. Why should anyone working anywhere be expected to put up with their employer being an incompetent idiot?

Yes, Trump can go back to lying, creating a Linch mob, bulling, having toddler type tantrums and putting the country in danger. At least he not the president anymore. The reason Trump was suspended is because he put the country in danger and cause the terrorist act on Jan 6. Twitter allowed all kinds of free speech. But you can't just spew a bunch of lies and untrue news and politics on a platform and expect these lies to stay.

I think Twitter will have to do a lot of work moderating people. Or they will let the place go wild. Which can lead to lawsuits. I think politics on Twitter and Facebook are for the extreme right or left. So, I don't do politics on Facebooks. I don't do Twitter.

I think people are underestimating him personally.

During a restructure of a company changes will always happen.

The man has resources to bring in competent people he has with his other ventures - like SpaceX and Telsa, etc - on a temporary basis to help handle hurdles. It wont be smooth and it won't be pretty, but its not like he doesn't have more employees working for him that have the same requirements of working JUST THAT HARD for him if they want to keep their jobs. For some strange reason many stay, and no one stops to think about that part.

Sounds like some of the bloat at twitter needed to be removed anyway. Companies are that taken over by other companies? They all tend to bring in their own people to help handle things. It's not like Twitter employees are the only ones that can handle this technology. Many times you have people leaving, fired, or laid off when this happens too.

I believe people are blowing this out of proportion.

People don't need twitter to do that. We see lies about others all the time even here on the forum.

I mean even the White House and Elizabeth Warren were recently fact checked on twitter for the statements the sent out.

People shouldn't be spreading lies about new and politics....yet they do it all the time in some many other ways constantly. Don't see that stopping either.

How is that strawman? lol it hardly fits the definition. (The typical straw man argument creates the illusion of having refuted or defeated an opponent's proposition through the covert replacement of it with a different proposition) I mean if anyone could be accused of that it would be your comment - which had nothing to do with what I was pointing out.

I was pointing out people are underestimating the man, and his resources to get the job done in restructuring. Then you link to some article over him firing 9 employees at SpaceX. The article hardly refutes what I mentioned.

Firing people from his other ventures due to a strange open letter - and people complaining to management about over receiving the open letter and that impact on them - has nothing to do with him being able to bring competent people over from those same ventures to help with Twitter's restructuring.
