We are all shaped by our experiences, vets included.
A co-worker's son, for example. His horrific war experience made him want to join the police because, she said, "he liked guns too much." Then he wanted to join a swat team. Someone who "likes guns too much" is exactly the kind of person who shouldn't be a policeman.
Does that mean I hate vets? No. But many of them need help to recover from their emotional and physical wounds.
Lots of veterans wind up divorcing when returning from war because they hadn't been given help to heal.
My son visits the grave of a former student who committed suicide after leaving the Marines.
A scout I know was recruited by the Marines. Came home and told his mom he was going to be a killing machine. She refused to sign the papers. "That's not what I raised you for," she said.
If veterans want to teach, let them get degrees, have time to decompress, all fully paid for by the GI bill. No shortcuts.
