Because Jesus wasn't talking about "going to heaven" here. This is part of the larger theme in John's Gospel that Jesus is the Incarnate Logos, God become man. The only way we can truly know God the Father is through His Son who has come in the flesh and made God known to us (John 1:18).

This does still present salvation as exclusively in and through Jesus; but the point isn't that we use Jesus to get to heaven; the point is that heaven comes to us in Jesus and that's what salvation looks like: God come down. Not us going up, but Him come down. Grace.

Can't take one verse out of context and use it to question the message of God's Word.

John 14:2-6, Jesus said he is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for them, his disciples, and that someday he would come back to get them & take them to that same place which he just told them was his Father's house. Who do you think is in the Father's house, if you guessed the Father you got that one right.
Then, when Thomas said that they do not know where he, Jesus, is going, and asked how can they know the way, Jesus explained that he is the way, he is the truth, and he is the life & that only through him can anyone go to the Father who is in his house which is in heaven. Got it?
Really, you need to read ALL of the Gospel of John to understand the true message of that book; that is if you are really looking for the truth found there.
