Through studying scripture I've discovered that if a sinner (an unrighteous person) prays, God finds this practice an abomination. He finds their worship to be an abomination as well.

With that said, what if this sinner is truly thankful that he woke up in the morning and wasn't dead? What if he is truly thankful to God that he has a home and food to eat, and realizes that he has these things through God's common grace?

Is God disgusted with that too?

Curious, where in Scripture does it say that God hates when a sinner prays?

Welcome to CF. I'm not finding that in scripture or have ever heard God denying a sinners prayers. What I do know is many pray to "other gods" so He does not know them. Blessings.

We are all sinners. Some sin willfully, and some stumble into sin. Some sin from weakness and yet others sin when filled with pride and believe that sinning with impunity is their entitlement.

Attitude or intent is what many of these verses try to convey to the reader. How is your conscience?

Most of my adult life was willful din and rebellion. I was an atheist until God revealed himself to me.

My conscious is sorry God what I've done, but I'm still pretty corrupt in my heart but have been working on things. No longer an atheist.

The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 may help you to walk further down the path. It is a life's journey that will not be accomplished in a few weeks or years - if ever in this mortal coil. Be patient.

It may take you many years to notice that it is the Holy Spirit which convinces you to repent of sins, and in which order.

So I have been skimming through your posts. DUDE! Relax. God's favorite thing is sinners repenting of their sin.
2 Samuel 12:13 - And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

Some encouragement:
1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Psalms 103:8 - The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

Satan's favorite weapons are temptation, and over bearing guilt.
Zechariah 3:1 - And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

Proverbs 28:9 - He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.
Are you right now refusing to seek God? I don't think so. Your prayer will not be an abomination.
James 4:3 - Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
James 4:4 - Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
God does not like those that use him for selfish purposes. I fail to see how your position is selfish.

Isaiah 59:2 - But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Refusing to hear God, then asking God to hear you is hypocritical. God likes those that understand his Holiness, that are humble in heart. If you listen to God's message, then God will listen to you.

One day this comforted me:

Even the evil tyrant Manasseh was forgiven by God

Manasseh, king of Judah, was certainly a cruel tyrant. His story is told in 2 Chronicles 33. He was an idolater who turned against God and worshiped every kind of pagan deity. Manasseh was guilty of immorality, he practiced every conceivable evil and perversion, devoted himself to witchcraft and was a murderer; even sacrificing his sons to a pagan god.

God's judgment fell on Manasseh. He was bound in chains and taken away to Babylon. But that is not the end of his story. While the wicked king was confined in the dungeon he had time to think, and Manasseh began to pray. This man who deserved Hell cried out to God for forgiveness -- and God answered.

Yes King Manasseh. He was one of the first motivations I stumbled across early in my journey. It's a good reminder of God's mercy.

I sometimes prayed asking for things. Once I got a response like “God is not Santa Clause to deliver what you ask for, or God is not a magic genie to grant you three wishes.”

Some taught I should pray asking for what God wants me to do. I have made so many mistakes, I should not try to tell God what to do. God already knows what to do. Sometimes I asked what to do and got an answer like, “You finished reading Mark, now start reading Luke.”

I've also asked what it is he wants me to do

You are in right standing with God as long as you have confessed your sins with repentance and placed your faith in Jesus as your Savior. So there is no reason to be concerned about your prayers being rejected by God. Consider Psalm 51
