Hello, everybody. Does anybody have any advice on how to truly forgive others who have hurt us? I have been a Christian for a long time, but I struggle with this. I want to be able to not think about things that were done to me, to not obsess about them, and move on. Our Lord Jesus asked the Father to forgive those who were crucifying Him. I find it amazing and I believe it's essential to be like that in our Christian walk, but I fail often in this area.

Honestly, I find it beneficial to see others through God's eyes.

If you look at yourself, and your own faults realistically, then also see God forgave you everything despite your sins.

Then, look at others like you once were; faulty, broken, a complete mess, ignorant of God. While their faults and sins might be different to yours, God still forgives all who ask because He knows the depth of ignorance we are steeped in.

It's not like most people mean to hurt others, but it is ignorance of God and ignorance of the results of their actions that causes sin against God as well as sins against each other

When we see people through God's eyes as people either completely lost or growing in faith yet imperfect, then we see them with love and care despite their many sins and failings. It's easier to forgive when we see others in this light: the Light of God's eyes.

This doesn't mean you have to be a doormat for people, especially those who won't learn from their repeated mistakes (there is balance even here) but it will help you to forgive them and move forward in your own life..

This was an incredibly helpful answer. I often forget to look at people the way God looks at them (and the way He looks at me). Thank you for your advice and God bless you.

Well, in what way does the Bible say God forgives us? He's omniscient, so He can't actually forget the things for which He's forgiven us. But the Bible says He "remembers our sin no more" (Jeremiah 31:34; Hebrews 8:12) and separates our sins from us as far as the East is from the West (Psalms 103:12). What God really does is refuse to bring past sins for which we've been forgiven into the present. This is, I believe, the heart of godly forgiveness: A conscious, willful choosing to leave the sins of the past in the past.

This kind of forgiveness doesn't require that we feel like forgiving someone; it doesn't require that they have asked for our forgiveness, either. We must simply follow God's example toward us and "remember no more" those things for which we have chosen to forgive another; when we forgive, we are agreeing never again to rehearse the past evils we have suffered at another's hands.

Thank you so much for that. It really helps.

Depending on your reading and comprehension ability, choose a short book like Rodney Hogue, Forgiveness, or a long one.

I think we have to decide to forgive three times a day, whenever we remember an offence. And stand in prayer and forgive, let them go from your anger to God's measures. Enjoy yourself. Also when you see them suffer, as from the proverbs, do not be happy, admire Jesus and Joseph from Genesis, with his brothers.

I have found that surrendering to the Spirit to bear the fruit of the Spirit, moves forgiveness.

Thank you. I think that's great advice.
