GLASGOW, Scotland — More than 30 firefighters tackled a devastating fire at a Catholic church in Glasgow, Scotland, in the early hours of Wednesday.

One person was rescued after the firefighters were called out following reports of a fire at St. Simon’s, Partick, on July 28.

They are now having to take down part of the front of the Church - stone by stone ! There was nothing left to support it so the Cross at the top was taken down first.

It is a beautiful little Church - the third oldest RC Church in Glasgow with very strong links to the Polish Community. I have attended Services there in the past.

Sr Mary , a sister of Notre Dame is in residence there and had to be helped to safety - her cat is still missing.

GLASGOW, Scotland — A man has been arrested and charged with wilful fire-raising after a Catholic church in Glasgow was destroyed last month.

The arrest was announced Aug. 17. The man arrested has not been publicly identified, but is described as being 24-years-old.

In Scotland, the charge of “wilful fire-raising” refers to when a person deliberately starts a fire that is intended to damage property.

St. Simon’s, Partick, a 163-year-old church in Glasgow, was reported to be on fire in the early morning of July 28. The church was destroyed and the fire was extinguished. One person was rescued and there were no injuries in the flames. The church was the third-oldest in Glasgow, and was originally called St. Peter’s. It was fully restored in 2008.
