Back in the day, pink was considered a manly colour. Little boys were dressed in pink and girls in the more calm blue. The red spectrum in general was associated with vigour, command and so. The British Empire thought it an appropriate colour for themselves:

Women who wore scarlet were asserting independance in a way, asserting themselves, so its association often went with dominatingly feminine women - the bright red lipstick or the women in the red dress of old stories. This is why it became favoured by suffragettes and those types, and so doing pink morphed into the stereotypical colour of girls so that today’s feminists baulk at it.

Now today we see this chap, oozing ”masculine” virtue:

It is actually a very good example of cultural meaning and its almost subconscious associations.

Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.

Someone actually broke the cycle down into specific years. (I can't vouch for the accuracy, except for the 20th century to present, which looks about right to me.)

I think that is taking it a bit far and odd. For instance, in the US the Civil War would be classed as good times in this scheme. I think the principle stands in general, but I don’t think you can really embody it by classing certain dates as such.
