In other words, God retains the appearance of bread and wine in this sacrament after consecration to avoid both revulsion in the part of the communicant and to avoid charges of cannibalism by pagans.

Then why did they claim substantial flesh and blood at Lanciano?

Those are Eucharistic miracles, and that doesn't contradict Wols' explanation. They aren't consumed. :)

Hmm, I thought I heard one time that they were consumed. Oh well...

But like, if someone was offered one of these hosts, would she take it? And if she did, wouldn't that contradict the no cannibalism thing?

Gordi,

The belief that the Eucharist contains the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus is too fantastic to be a lie. Who could make such a claim without fear of being branded a lunatic?

Were you to pick up a piece of radiated bread, it would appear to be a piece of ordinary bread. You would not know that it is radiated. And too, you see the Eucharist as bread but you cannot see its essence which is Jesus.

And there are many many examples of actual flesh and blood forming from the bread and wine.

The Eucharist is the very center of Catholic belief. It is like the pearl of great price described in the Gospel.

I suggest a prayerful and literal reading of John:6.

And IF it were possible to receive Jesus- Wouldn't you want to receive Him also? This doctrine has been alive from 33AD to 2003AD. The Catholic Church is the only institution to be in existance for that long.

The Eucharist is pre-figured in the first passover meal. And Jesus and His apostles were celebrating this Sedar meal at the Last Supper. Jesus offers Himself to you in this Eucharist. Come join in the meal. There is nothing on earth so sublime as receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.

In Christ,
Patrick

One of the things I love about Catholicism is the tradition in it all. The Mass itself is such a beautiful, amazing thing that there are not words to describe it. Since my confirmation almost a year ago, I've come to fully realize and understand the miracles that happen everyday. My heart is so full of love and peace when I recieve the Holy Eucharist that it often leaves me in tears in the face of God's great glory.

"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God"
1 John 3:1

That verse has so much meaning and is so very powerful. I am truly falling in love with God.
