Amanda Gorman's Dutch translator stands down after uproar that Black writer wasn't chosen

"An award-winning author has pulled out of translating inauguration poet Amanda Gorman’s work into Dutch — because of a furious uproar that a black writer was not chosen instead.

Gorman, 22, personally chose Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, the youngest winner of the International Booker prize, to translate her collection, “The Hill We Climb,” according to her Dutch publisher, Meulenhoff."

"But the choice sparked intense outrage, with journalist and activist Janice Deul writing in Volkskrant that the translator should be a “spoken-word artist, young, female and unapologetically Black.”

Deul called Rijneveld, 29, an “incomprehensible choice” whose hiring was a “missed opportunity.”

“They are white, nonbinary, have no experience in this field, but according to Meulenhoff are still the ‘dream translator’?” Deul wrote, using Rijneveld’s preferred pronouns."

This begs the questions, should only people of the same race and gender translate other people's words? What about if this gets translated in a majority non-black country such as Japan?

I don't think outrage should be newsworthy, at least if its the outrage of a single person that doesn't hold any position of power.

I also don't understand the "nonbinary" part of the criticism. Shouldn't that appease the left?

I don't think outrage should be newsworthy,

What about racism?

at least if its the outrage of a single person

The articles imply it's more than one person.

that doesn't hold any position of power.

Groups of people can hold power over an individual, regardless of whether they hold an official position.

I also don't understand the "nonbinary" part of the criticism. Shouldn't that appease the left?

Nonbinary people are often included under the umbrella term of transgender, so the fact that this journalist activist specifically wanted a female instead of a nonbinary person means she is being transphobic by the far left's own standards.

Don't expect reason or logic.

They don't like her because she is white.

The whole situation sounds like some kind of absurd comedy, but the fact that all these people are serious and there's probably a lot of money involved makes it kind of sad actually.

One person gets mad about something and tries to stir things up on social media, NY Post runs an article as if it is bigger than it really is. The usual suspects pretend as if this story is emblematic of something. Amanda Gorman chose, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, they should have stuck with that decision instead of listening to a lone activist online.

One person gets mad about something and tries to stir things up on social media,

It was more than one person, as stated in both articles.

NY Post runs an article as if it is bigger than it really is.

Poisoning the well fallacy.

I noticed you didn't include the CNN article in your comment, even though they have nearly the exact same title, reporting the exact same story, with the exact same quotes, with neither journalist making any personal comment on the situation and merely reporting what happened.

The usual suspects pretend as if this story is emblematic of something.

It is emblematic of something. Racism. I thought you would agree given your posting history.

Amanda Gorman chose, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, they should have stuck with that decision instead of listening to a lone activist online.

A quote from the activist themselves:

"An incomprehensible choice, in my opinion and that of many others who expressed their pain, frustration, anger, and disappointment via social media,"

It was more than one person as you keep claiming.

Me and many other people disagree with there being many other people.

Why do you disagree?
I did extensive, but hitherto unspecified research.

It's not racism for a white person to translate a black authors text. ESPECIALLY when the black author herself agrees with that white person.

The real person you are attacking here is Amanda Gorman herself. What's the matter? Is she suddenly no longer okay with you, just because she asked a white person to do something a black person could do?

What's the end game here? Total segregation of literature?

Ah, I see. Activist on social media says many others, then it must mean many others. I'm sure there is a groundswell of people that were all talking about this story before this single activist made noise on Twitter. It was a frenetic discussion, this activist was just among many calling things out...

A single activist on Twitter is emblematic of nothing.

When even you, a person really sensitive about issues like this, calls it a non-issue, I know that it is a non-issue.
