He was speaking of people in the time he lived in. He doesn't name them but they would have been people who opposed Christ, or thought they were the Christ.

Where does it say that?
Looks your adding to the Word like many do.
You'd have to say no one opposes Christ now.
Ludicrous.

there is a great multitude that composes each person and so there is a little bit of antichrist in most. those that have antichrist powerfully living in them are the most distinct of symbols that represent the evil one and can be more properly called an antichrist. all that is needed then is for the evils to die, then what is left is good. only the son of perdition shall be destroyed. only the vessels in us for destruction will be destroyed.

yeah, "the man of lawlessness, THAT SITTETH in the temple" - christians deny they are the temple of God when II Thess 2 is attempted to be taught.

And NOW there are MANY Antichrist's - 1 John 2:18

Who are they?
He answers that question in the passage:
22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies
the Father and the Son.
23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son
has the Father also.
...and in chapter 4
1 John 4:
2
By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come
in the flesh is of God,
3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.
And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming,
and is now already in the world.

And NOW there are MANY Antichrist's - 1 John 2:18

Who are they?

St. John was talking about early prot-Gnostic heretics, specifically he is condemning Docetism--the heresy which denied that Jesus was truly a flesh and blood human being, but only "appeared" to be solid flesh. This is why St. John in his epistle very explicitly identifies the antichrists with those who deny that Christ came in the flesh.

And NOW there are MANY Antichrist's - 1 John 2:18

Who are they?

In the case of 1 John, the writer goes on to say:

22 Who is the liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, [even] he that denieth the Father and the Son.

He is writing about a group of people who were in the Church but later renounced their faith and most likely went back to Judaism. They "went out from us" and then denied that Jesus was the Messiah. The "antichrist", or "spirit of antichrist", to the writer was those who denied Jesus as the Messiah.

In 2 John the writer says:

2Jo 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

Note the difference. The first group denied that Jesus was the Messiah, but the second group denied that Jesus had appeared in the flesh. The second group did not deny that Jesus was the Messiah, but that he did not have a physical body. They were followers of the gnostic teaching that all physical matter was evil, and while Jesus did appear and was the Messiah, he was only a "spirit being" with no physical body.

"Antichrist" is a heresy. It is a heresy that affected Christians among the apostles' first century flocks, and was a sign of the final hour of the last days (1 John 2:18-19). The Christians who were affected by this spirit "went out from" (i.e. "left") the apostolic congregations to chase the heresy and teach it to many others. These apostate Christians were called "many deceivers" in 2 John 1:7:

"For MANY DECEIVERS are entered into the world who confess not that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist." (2 John 1:7)

"As you have heard that antichrist would come, even now there are MANY ANTICHRISTS, by which we know it is the last hour. They WENT OUT FROM US, but they were not OF us..."(1 John 2:18-19).

They had left the apostles flocks after being in them for some time. These apostate christians are mentioned again in 1 John 4:1-3, where St. John also calls those under the heresy of antichrist "MANY FALSE PROPHETS."

IN SUM

Antichrist is not a future to us world-ruler secular leader dude that has power over the world, or even one single nation. Antichrist is a heresy, or a spirit of heresy that manifested among MANY Christians in the apostles' flocks in the 60s AD causing them to deny that one had to have Jesus to have the Father (1 John 2:22-24) and causing them to proclaim that Jesus never actually came in real human flesh (1 John 4:2-3; 2 John 1:7).

It never ceases to amaze me how much mythology has been built up over 2000 years on this idea of a Mr. Antichrist world ruler dude. No such thing exists anywhere in the bible, yet so many Christians buy into it hook, line, and sinker -- thanks to Hal Lindsey, J. Hagee, LaHaye, and other so-called "prophecy experts."

It is impossible that some future Rev 13, or 2 Thessalonians persona can qualify as part of the "antichrists." John definitions include components that any proposed Rev 13 or 2 Thessalonians personas could not measure up to.

I agree.

So many people misinterpret scripture. Especially Revelation. They read it with 'modern eyes' so to speak.

I made the mistake of reading a Hal Lindsay book once. My opinion of it is very low. In fact, I think his works are spiritually dangerous, and his claim that Satan owns this world, after the resurrection of our Lord and His triumph over Hell, trampling down death by death, is blasphemous.

And NOW there are MANY Antichrist's - 1 John 2:18

Who are they?

It is very easy to be deceived on this matter, as many Churches are divided over John's meaning, some to their own deceptions. So it's very important to stick to the actual Scripture as written:

1 John 2:18
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

KJV

The word "antichrist" appears 2 times in that verse, not once. The first phrase is in the singular tense, meaning a particular antichrist.

The second antichrist example in that verse is plural, about many antichrists.

In the first part, John says the brethren there had 'already' heard that antichrist shall come. When did they first hear about that? John doesn't say here, but Jesus did (in John 14:30, pointing to Satan).

Then John gives the brethren new information, the fact that "many antichrists" now exist, meaning those had already come and were at work then.

Putting all this together in the mind then simply means, the brethren had heard that 'the Antichrist' shall come, but that already his servants, the many antichrists, were already at work. Apostle Paul was actually teaching the same idea in 2 Thessalonians 2 when he warned about the coming of the "man of sin" (the Antichrist) to sit in the temple of God (in Jerusalem) for the end, and proclaim himself as God. And then he said the "mystery of iniquity" (many antichrists) was already at work.

Same thing in Matthew 24 when Lord Jesus warned that many would come in His name saying they are Christ, which is the "many antichrists" idea. But later at verse 24 He revealed the coming of a singular false-Messiah that will work great and signs and wonders in Jerusalem that IF it were possible, would deceive even His very elect. (In the Greek, the word is pseudochristos, made up of pseudo, meaning false, and christos which is singular for Christ. Dr. James Strong in his Strong's Exhaustive Concordance translated that "false Christs" KJV phrase to 'a spurious Messiah' for this reason.)

Antichrists are straightforwardly those who oppose Christ. In 2 Thessalonians 2:3, the Antichrist is described as the man of lawlessness, which by contrast means that Christ is the man of lawfulness, and indeed, he spent his ministry teaching how to obey the Mosaic Law both by word and by example, so people can either follow him or oppose him.
