Biden has called for unity. What are we to unify around, and why?

I'm not American, as you know, but I think one thing would be for both parties to make a concerted effort to work together and compromise. For that to happen both sides need to return closer to center as over time, particularly in recent years, they've approached their respective fringe of the political scale which will only make compromise and working together harder or impossible.

Also an issue that isn't unique to the U.S., but putting the people before party. Towing the party line is good for the politicians, not so good for the people they're elected to serve.

Edit to add: it's also down to individuals to be more willing to listen and engage. It's not always easy, especially nowadays when most people feel they have to know the answer or be right. I don't do new years resolutions but I must admit I'm trying to be calmer and more respectful when discussing opposing views or proposing my own.

This is a good question that made me think.

I'd say: reality. Lets unify around reality. Ironically tho, that may be a fantasy.

Unity in facing the common problems the country is dealing with at the moment. An out of control pandemic, a depressed economy that is yet another victim of the pandemic, growing wealth inequality and the long standing problems associated with racial inequality. We have to at the very least agree these are problems we are facing before we can do anything about them. That’s where we should be unified.

Whatever Biden's agenda happens to be, natch!

That's all he means when he talks about "unity"-- do everything the way the radical wing of his party wants it done, and we'll all be on the same page, right?

That's how he, Biden, got to be where he is today--do what Bernie, AOC, Pelosi, and the other members of that wing of the party want done and, in return, he'll get to be their nominee. If he had not agreed to that kind of "unity," he wouldn't be in any position now to tell the rest of the country to fall in line like he did.

Trump says it will be hard to unify country without a ‘major event’

Trump says it will be hard to unify country without a 'major event'

WWIII?
Could be.

Trump was the first president in the lives of most of us here NOT to take the United States into a war; whereas the Biden and his colleagues have a history of wanting to go to war.

So Trump is probably right about this--our country has historically come together in the face of a common enemy, meaning a foe we are facing militarily, whereas domestic setbacks do not seem to produce the same unity.

The Neocons start war with their preemptive strike policy.

Well, considering that he is also giving speeches calling conservatives white supremacists, it seems that we are supposed to unify around pushing the left agenda.
