Hey all,
So, I'm looking for another job. I'm a receptionist at a specialty clinic, and it just doesn't pay enough to live on my own in the city I work in. I've been applying for government jobs out of state, and today one of my applications got referred to the next level to work in a military hospital (This means they might call me to schedule an interview... or they might not).
I was really excited about this. Basically, it would be what I'm doing now: I'd be the "lady at the front desk," more or less. Plus there's reimbursement for relocation, and the state itself seems cheaper to live in.
But (there's always a "but," isn't there??).
I thought, "the current place I work at is Catholic. They don't do abortions as a rule. But what about this military clinic??"
And so I googled it: the military won't do abortions unless the pregnancy is due to something bad (the I and R words).

So that's where I'm stuck. Obviously I'm not the doctor, I wouldn't be doing abortions. But what if I'm asked to schedule the patient to come back for the procedure? Or take the call where the patient calls and asks for a slot so she can get the procedure?

And we're not talking about an abortion clinic here. We're talking the equivalent to the local hospital, or even the local clinic where you take your kids for their runny nose and yearly checkups.

(I feel like I'm stuck in a dead end. I have a limited skill set--office work-- and frankly, I don't want to work in healthcare anymore. But if the pandemic is anything to go by, it is a pretry stable place to be as it's essential. )

So... yeah.

PS: this does not by any means mean that I don't care about the bad things that happen to women that can result in pregnancy. My heart goes out to those women. What I am against is abortion (and obviously I wish those women hadn't gone through those bad experiences in the first place).

They might have a counseling unit that you can refer such women to. If a woman is faced with a life threatening health situation if she keeps a pregnancy then you will be saving a life when you schedule the patient to come back for the procedure but if "something bad" means e.g an emotional situation, like you, i don't support abortion in such a case and I won't want to be involved. When you get the job perhaps you can speak to your Boss about this, he might exempt you from scheduling such cases.

I would pray over the matter. I can see the conflict your having, this pandemic has made it difficult for many people. Fear & worry have made themselves very present in many people's lives. When a good opportunity presents itself its hard to turn it down however when it doesn't line up with what we believe we get this uneasy feeling and its because we know whats right from wrong.

I believe God provides us with what we need and places us where we are needed. I'm sure He sees what you truly desire in your heart. I feel like you should pray about it and allow God to guide your steps. Remember if this doesn't work out simply because they don't call back or because you decided you don't want to go through with it, God won't leave you hanging. He always has opportunities for us, in your case maybe something outside of the office medical field if thats what you truly want.

I don't know you too well but I can tell by your post that you care enough to really look at all aspects. Some people wouldn't care and just take the job for the money but when God sees that we don't want to participate in anything that will contradict what we believe it pleases Him because it shows we're trying our best to follow the truth.

I appreciate the responses. I feel like I'm over thinking it, but at the same time, I don't really want to move across the country for a job in iffy about. (I applied for a similar position at an orthopedics clinic in a different state, which I'd prefer, I think, but i haven't heard a peep from those folks.)

Since you wouldn't be directly assisting these women in obtaining abortions (and hopefully such instances would be few and far between for you), I don't think it's reason to not consider the job. Pretty much every healthcare network or hospital or clinic is going to be connected on some level with procedures and policies that our beliefs don't agree with. If you get a call inquiring about abortion services, that's not the same as taking the woman's hand and walking her into the operating room. I would handle the call and then pray for that woman specifically afterwards.

when you ask God about this, does any scripture come to mind? look for a second or even third witness from His Word before you make a certain decision to leave where you are. right now it seems from your initial post that money is the reason for leaving where you are; but if you're where God wants you to be, then you're blessed with favor there - God can lead you about how to reduce expenses to live within current means for now, as well as provide scripture to confirm His leading to either leave your current job or to stay where you are for now. if you're led by money, you can't be led by God...
