Do you think that waving around weapons could possibly escalate a non-violent situation into a violent one?

Of course. No responsible gun owner "waves weapons around".

The general rule is, keep the gun(s) out of sight or in a non-threatening position unless and until it's necessary to shoot.

Waving guns around in a threatening manner is called "brandishing"; it's illegal.

I can think of two good reasons for this.

1.) We don't want to escalate a situation which could possibly otherwise result in a peaceful outcome. Never raise any weapon unless you intend to use it. Raising a weapon prompts the party, that it is being raised against, to act.

2.) Don't show your opponent your hand. Even young children playing "go fish" understand the reason why.

Major thread drift began with the definition of being prepared to provide protection to ones loved ones as "waving guns around".

I was specifically referring to Darkhorse's idea, which seemed to be that people should use guns to threaten unruly mobs that get near their homes.

His reply clears up that erroneous and emotional interpretation.
We see that a lot these days, I know of none but left leaning who react with emotion, I have never known any on the right side to make emotional decisions and reactions, only reasoned and reasonable decisions and choices.
Best wishes
