From the Statement of Purpose:

A Fundamentalist Christian is a born again believer in Lord Jesus Christ who:
  1. Maintains an immovable allegiance to the inerrant, infallible, and verbally Inspired Bible;
  2. Believes whatever the Bible says is so;
  3. Judges all things by the Bible, and is judged only by the Bible, aka - "Sola Scriptura";
  4. Affirms the foundational truths of the historic Christian Faith:
    a. The doctrine of the Trinity
    b. The incarnation, virgin birth, substitutionary atonement, bodily resurrection, ascension into Heaven, and Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ
    c. The new birth through regeneration of the Holy Spirit
    d. The resurrection of saints to life eternal
    e. The resurrection of the ungodly to final judgment and eternal death
    f. The fellowship of the saints, who are the body of Christ;
  5. Practices fidelity to that faith, and endeavors to preach it to every creature;
  6. Exposes and separates from all ecclesiastical denial of that Faith, compromise with error, and apostasy from the Truth; and
  7. Earnestly contends for the Faith once delivered.
  8. Therefore, Fundamentalism is a militant orthodoxy with a soulwinning zeal. While Fundamentalists may differ on certain interpretations of Scripture, we join in unity of heart and common purpose for the defense of the Faith and the preaching of the Gospel, without compromise or division.
Thus a Fundamentalist can be from quite a few Protestant denominations, even nondenominational. Those that defer to a view that sacred tradition is equal to scripture (not sola scriptura) would not. For more information, see Fundamentalism.

Can someone give me the cliff notes
I'm going to agree with TampaSteve's description, and add one item....

Love. As defined in 1 Corinthians 13:1-8.

This is really critical, because of what Jesus said about a VERY orthodox church in Revelation 2:1-7.
apparently Ephesus was a very orthodox church, but had lost its first love.
And that loss of love resulted in their darn near being handed their hat and shown the door.... So.....

Love matters.... genuine, godly, true, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love.

I have understood Fundamentalism as usually that which requires Bible verses to prove all things, but that can be faulty if one applies traditions, and takes verses out of context (like using Old Testament truths of that era to apply to the Church age in the New Testament). It can also border on legalism, rather than the expectation of God for man to be "rightly dividing the Word of Truth" universal as told. I see Bible-only as the intent of God, keeping all counsel and conditions of the universal church worldwide, by ALL assemblies in fellowship worldwide ---which likely will not happen fully due to various preferences; then it can ONLY be implemented if all Christian gatherings can agree in certain places. It does not look like it will be what God intends until the Lord returns???

I do not believe Fundamentalist Christians adhere to one particular translation of the bible, e.g. KJV-Only. The Bible needs to be understood as the people it was written for would easily understand it, both Jews and Christians of Jesus time. The doctrines introduced by the Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox religions takes us away from that clear understanding. In general, all protestant denominations do the same thing. For those of us seeking the truth of God's word, multiple translations, word studies, commentaries, etc. are needed and should not be avoided.

I see the remedy as being: Bible-only and "rightly dividing the Word of Truth" as God says; yet many claim that premise, as you say, while scrambling verses from OT and NT and modern Bible versions, to build a doctrine they like. As one has said: 'a mind persuaded against its will is of the same opinion still'. Let us be honest and not seek a way to find something we like ---rather what our Creator-God is truly telling man. I could discuss that further in personal conversation if one is interested in exploring it.
