I think the vast majority of people agree with the premise of the George Flyod protests and what happened to him was wrong. So what is the next step? Specifically what would the protesters (and others) like to see happen? It would be interesting to hear specific ideas and not vague calls for reform and change.

Black Lives Matter said the following:
They want to see the arrest of all the officers involved [in the murder of George Floyd]. They want to have no more terror, no more police terror in their communities,” Cullors said. “Everybody wants to be apologized to. Everybody wants to be told, ‘I'm sorry. What I did was wrong. It was unacceptable. We won't do it again and, in fact, this is how we change.’

I think this is the overall goal, but exactly how do we get there? If you could make some changes what would they be and why do you think they would work?

Good question. Racism is inherent in the fallen human nature. It's not just black/white. How do you change things? I don't believe that humanity has the answer. It needs a change of heart and that is God's domain. Since just about every possible group is demanding its rights, conflict is now inevitable. Society is reaping what it has sown.

There needs to be some kind of sit down meeting with the leaders or spokesman male or female. They hash things out with their local officials and move forward.

Overthrow the government and replace it with Utopian communism...

I guess a more realistic answer is education. I think schools in America should prioritise African American history (if they aren't already?) and force police officers and civil servants to sit exams to prove that they have read and understood the meaning of the term "equal rights for all".

Education, education and more education. But done right.

I guess another thing we have to keep in mind, is what issue are we trying to solve? Systematic racism or a few bad apples in the police force? Some may say that racism causes the bad apples; but how do we then explain the vast majority of officers who don't abuse their power and of course you have bad apples for all kinds of reasons.

Good questions. I might start with a Federally funded and run program of training for local police departments in de-escalation and community engagement. And put some Federal pressure on departments to undergo training.

Good questions and I dont have an answer. They are probably interlinked. You get a few bad apples and they get protected by the system. A lot of their actions can be passed off as good policing until they cross a line for the world to see. However, at that point, its too late. I was in a business meeting at the hospital I work at to discuss new security cameras. The presenter, who was black, said that these cameras could be controlled at a station and zoom in, out, move by the security department. The police officer at the meeting stated, "Dont ever call me security, I have the right to arrest you and if I want to, I have the right to shoot you". Never saw that guy after that.

However, this REALLY shook me and I really began shifting my view of racism inherent in the system.

We'll never make a change until we learn how to listen and understand it is us that need to change. As long as we expect others to change for us, we won't get anywhere.

As Christians, we hope for God's Spirit to change us from within but we cannot expect God to change those without his Spirit. But, they can change but we cannot force our beliefs on then but we can show God's love to them.

We can start by listening. We cannot understand what others have gone through without going through it but we can listen.

I believe what happened during the detainment of Mr. Floyd was a tragedy, and I believe the case should be investigated and the appropriate charges brought.

I also the department they worked for needs investigated as well, and some questions answered and addressed as to proper training of police men and women, and any issues with PTSD appropriately addressed and periodically examined.

From reporting I have heard that there were previous incidents of this nature with Chauvin, and I think those issues should have been addressed appropriately or should have been addressed prior to this event (including dismissal) and they obviously were tolerated within that department and that is a serious departmental issue which should be addressed.

However, I lived in the ghetto (the part of town even sane black people won't go in) and where I lived there was an excessive amount of crime, so much so police didn't have time to even allow you to report minor crimes (we once had our tags stolen off our car and the cops told us it wasn't serious enough for them to even file a report on it, they had far bigger things on their plate to do than deal with such a small incident)

That left me having to check neighborhood security cameras from nearby businesses, and we literally tracked down the "who" of who stole our plates and got them back.

Which is, in my opinion, what cops should be doing... but there is so much serious domestic violence, rapes. murders, robbery, drive by shootings and more that such minor things simply don't get on the radar.

I've seen with my own eyes cops allow convicted felons to throw their weapons/guns so they didn't get the more serious parole violations and firearms charges...

drugs are sold on every street corner people do drugs openly at bus stops without caring if cops are around to see... the whole of some areas are seriously frightening, and if there wasn't police presence no one on earth could live in those areas.

So are there more blacks being arrested? Yes. But there isn't the abuse of power or terrorism by police BLM wants to cry about.

You don't see in white neighborhoods what you see in ghettos, white people keep their dirt under the rug so to speak and most really are polite and kind. Ghettos it's in your face, and it has its own rules to live by. The only thing standing between law abiding citizens and anarchy is the police, and I have nothing but respect for what they do and what they deal with.

I've seen it, I've lived it and commend the cops for the job I've personally seen them do.

I’m certain that their are many honorable police officers just heartsick over this as well. Another brick to carry on their shoulders because of those within the force that abuse their authority and turn into oppressive thugs and making this something they have to pay for as well. Many with their lives.

I am not sure we are in agreement except the the man's death was tragic. The mob killed a blank police officer last night yet, no protest, and not even much talk about it on here. Does David Dorn matter who was the police officer killed last night? They (BLM) want this and that, well I want to stop being labeled a bad person all the time from the media and organizations like BLM just because I am white, I want them to stop telling me I am bad because I am a conservative and support our President. If they (BLM) want change then they must change too not just one side.

I just saw where in Seattle some protesters are asking to defund the Seattle Police Department. And to not prosecute any protesters arrested over the last five days.

"Protesters marching through downtown Seattle are calling for the defunding of the Seattle Police Department".

I think they would be better off reading some of the suggestions in this thread. Doing away with the police altogether is a bit over the top!

Agreed, that is what they want total lawlessness.
