Social distancing a week earlier could have saved 36,000 US lives

Wow the power of hindsight!

Let me do you all one better, if the Chinese government has been more transparent and informed the world earlier instead of downplaying it there would not be a pandemic! #mindblown

By the time the US lockdown was relevant you had already seen multiple European countries locking down and being battered by the virus. This wasn’t something no-one could have predicted would effect America.

Same can be said about Europe and the rest of the world, when the virus first turn from outbreak to epidemic in China they could have impose travel restrictions. But of course they didn't. That's how Europe got infected Chinese tourists.

The only truly smart one was Taiwan, started way back in December 2019. While WHO and the world are slacking.

So how far back are we playing the pin the blame game?

You answered your own argument. The EARLIER measures were introduced, the lower the death toll.....

I think you mean “Thanks Governors”.

Nope. I mean the “stable genius” who ignored all his briefings, was praising Chy-na for their “transparency”, was telling the US people that it was “only 15 cases, soon to zero” and whose sole focus has been on economic activity which assists his re-election, rather than saving lives.

Again.....Thanks Donnie....

What I'm saying is this.. hindsight is 2020. Or a Chinese saying when there is "if only" there will be no beggars.

All these studies saying if only we acted X days earlier Y amount will be saved are as insightful as reading yesterday's news. Turn us all into second hand experts.

At the same time we have to ask ourselves what we have been doing until the lockdown? Why didn't we take a personal initiative to self preserve instead of relying on "experts" to say so?

Well, I’m quite certain that regardless of what he would have done, you would find fault.

Your problem here is that you don’t need to use hindsight. There were other nations acting at the time to put in place the measures that were also being recommended for the US (massive ramp-up of testing, immediate social distancing, etc). The difference is that Trump wouldn’t heed the call...

But perhaps we can learn from what happened in time to mitigate the 2nd wave.

Exactly...!

The major value of these statistical analyses is not to unfairly and cruelly criticise this hard-working president (sigh...). It’s to provide a window as to what would be a better course of action when this thing mounts its next wave...learning from mistakes and all that...

NONSENSE
Let's see what China did to the world. There have been about 5000 deaths in the rest of Asia, probably less than the latest cyclone. Europe and the Americans will have had hundreds of thousands of deaths. Sure, China could have told the Asians (and us) more sooner and stopped air travel. Perhaps the 5000 would have been cut down. What is the excuse for the 100K deaths in the Americas? We'll never really know how bad the Central and South American numbers are. Perhaps, just perhaps it was the US governmental response that was most to blame.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese were traveling to Asian countries in November, December, January and February, many more than to the US. Everyone was given the same late information. Everyone had the same information from past epidemics. Everyone closed down air travel, most earlier than the US.

The US acted one way and the Asian countries acting differently. Let's ignore Chinese data and look at the rest of Asia. Remember that the first verified case in South Korea and the US were on about the same day. Everyone has access to good test kits and poor ones. Everyone had the ability to start whatever protocols they wished. Everyone had a copy of the genome to work from. In the end, the US has tested MORE per capita than the Asian countries. Trump considers this a grand success, not understanding that testing in late May is just not the same as testing in Late February or March.

Was this really an epidemic like no other? Did we NOT learn from fighting SARS, MERS, M1N1 and even the common flu each year. Well, some administrations and governments chose one direction. The US chose another. We told sick people to go home and infect their families instead of isolating them. We tested no one without severe symptoms. South Korea had an early test, isolate, treat and trace program.

Does anyone really think that it was the better doctors in Asia that made the difference? Does that REALLY make the up the difference between 95K dead and 5K dead? Or was the governments that made the difference?

DEATHS PER MILLION
289 US
6 Japan
5 South Korea
4 Singapore
4 Australia
4 New Zealand
3 India

Total Deaths
95,000 US
3,585 India
777 Japan
264 South Korea
101 Australia
23 Singapore
21 New Zealand
==================
JUST BY THE WAY
When comparing with Europe, the results are mixed. There were 8 European countries who have done worse (so far) than the US, including Sweden. Many more are doing better. Some are much worse, even twice s and: Belgium, Spain and the UK. Of course, most of Scandinavia, Germany and Austria are doing much better.
