Jesus said, 'You have heard the law that says,' A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a notice of divorce. But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery and anyone who marries her commits adultery' (Matthew 5:11-12)

Is this inspired by the lockdown? :sorry: I am grateful that I have a supportive husband and we are enjoying time with our children. Unfortunately there are too many people I know that are not in my position. What biblical advice would you suggest for someone in a violent relationship? My close friend is in this position and is confused as there has been no adultery.

Hi 'God is Merciful!' It is difficult to give a Biblical verse for divorce for abuse, except (1 Corinthians 7:15) constructive desertion. When a spouse repeatedly breaks the covenant of marriage and the marriage contract is broken the marriage is broken and where there is danger from the abuser the victim cannot be expected to stay in the marriage. This scenario is not covered in Scripture apart from (1 Corinthians 5:11) 'Drive out the wicked one' I don't have the authority to say divorce and remarriage is permissable in such a situation but it is understandable that the couple cannot stay together.

Thank you quietbloke. Divorce is a tricky subject. I came across Malachi 2:16 recently that suggests that a man should not hate his wife because that would be doing violence to one he should protect. Admittedly it says hate and divorce, but unfortunately some people want to keep someone in an abusive situation because it gives them power. I think that the best I can do is pray for them both and try and offer support, although at a distance right now. :confused2:

I am single and have never been married, so I cannot imagine what it would be like for a couple contemplating divorce and the pain of going through with it.

The Bible does speak against divorce in quite strong terms, but for those personally affected by it, their choices are never that simple. In an ideal world, a couple would work hard to resolve their relationship issues, but we know all too well that life is not always that easy. Some have suffered infidelity, psychological and physical abuse, or even sexual and financial exploitation.

Fundamentally, the Bible teaches us to love God and love our neighbour. That sums up the law and the prophets. But no matter how much we love a person, it is difficult to re-establish trust once it has been seriously breached. Sometimes the best way we can show a person that we love them is knowing when we have to let them go, to give them the freedom to rediscover their lives and make their own choices. It is a lot more complicated when there are children involved and decisions have to be made that take into account their best interests.
