Please note what the inspired word of God is good for according to this verse: for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. The Complete Jewish Bibile puts it in perhaps clearer language (especially the "reproof" bit) "All Scripture is God-breathed and is valuable for teaching the truth, convicting of sin, correcting faults and training in right living;"
Note also the ultimate purpose as per vs 17: "so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Am I being extreme when I deduce from this, that the Scriptures were never intended primarily to be "good for" ancient history, structural geology, biology and ecology, or other aspects of natural science? And when the Scriptures are used for purposes other than those stated, and in particular for equipping us for every good work, they are being misused? Where Scriptures are used for the purposes, or the means, of dividing the household of God, for pursuing individual (hidden) agendas, self-aggrandizement and generation of financial profit, they are being wrongfully used, even abused.
