Milwaukee police say they arrested a 61-year-old man in connection with the attack against Mahud Villalaz that caused second-degree burns. Charges will be brought forward to the District Attorney's Office in the next couple of days, Milwaukee Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Sheronda Grant confirmed to CNN.

The attack occurred after the two men got into an argument Friday night, and the suspect threw acid on Villalaz, the police department said.

Villalaz told CNN affiliate WISN the argument was over how Villalaz had parked his car.

Villalaz said his attacker called him an "illegal" and told him to "get out of this country" before throwing acid in his face, WISN reported

Villalaz is a United States citizen originally from Peru.

Who walks around with acid in their hand? This guy was looking for someone to hurt and found an excuse. Hope he gets the book thrown at him.

Being insulted while having acid thrown in your face is so much worse than just having acid thrown in your face.

No. It's definitely better to JUST get acid thrown in your face than getting acid thrown in your face, and then insulted, demeaned and humiliated. Like SOOOOOOOO much better.

Second-degree burns (partial thickness burns) affect the epidermis and the dermis (lower layer of skin). They cause pain, redness, swelling, blistering and permanent scarring. It can damage nerves, blood vessels and can cause severe fluid and electrolyte shifts.

Even the most superficial of burns that occur on the eye, results in changes to visual acuity.

Extensive second degree burns have significant mortality and morbidity rates.

They can cause scarring but I've never heard of nerve damage.

Not just nerve damage but damage to blood vessels, morbidities like contracting scars limiting mobility, DVTs (clots in veins that can go anywhere in the body including lung, brain and eyes). When 2nd degree burns are extensive, you get a significant shift of fluid from the vascular space to the interstitial space, causing complications such as hypovolaemia, electrolyte abnormalities, and renal failure. If the acid encroaches on sensitive structures like the eye, partial or total loss of vision is inevitable.

These aren't exstensive though....judging from the pictures.

Your probably right though he had a shirt on. The trouble with the face is that it effects very sensitive structures such as eyes. If it gets in the mouth it affects gums and subsequently dentition. The facial and trigeminal nerves are superficial and can be affected causing sensory deficits and palsy. But equally damaging is facial scarring causing not just physical issues, but also psychosocial.

I'm not trying to belittle the damage done here....I'm sure it's an awful experience. I'm just saying, when I hear "acid attack", I think this...

Which seems pretty recently in the aftermath of the attack.

Fair enough - Its not as severe as the first picture by all accounts. That said his conjunctiva looks inflamed as is the majority of the left side of his face . We cant see his neck or chest. There's blistering occurring which predisposes him to infection.

Acid attacks are terrible. The recovery is long. Hopefully he has no structural injuries ie nerves, visual acuity or gums.
