"Woke" is a term coined by various individuals who self-profess to hold various "progressive" viewpoints in order to declare that they have "woken up" to the "reality" of what they consider to be various societal ills and injustices in the modern world.

However, the term has largely been adopted by critics of these individuals as a term of derision to reflect the real situation at work, that situation being "many of the individuals who use that term to describe themselves suffer from a form of tunnel vision that has prevented them from being able to put what they regard as the ills and injustices into full perspective".

As part of this, you'll sometimes hear the phrase "Get woke, go broke" stated after an offering intended to appeal to "progressive" sentiments ended up being a bust. In this instance, the powers-that-be decided to make their product offering more "progressive" without doing the necessary marketing research that should be done to justify the change, and as a result missed the fact that the proposed changes would alienate more customers than draw in.

For example, suppose that a pair of "woke" chefs decide that a particular area needs a 100% vegan restaurant... solely because there isn't one, and so they figure there should be pent-up demand for it. Had they dug deeper, they would have realized that the reason why no one else had established such a restaurant is because the only dedicated supplier in the area charges so much that by the time the cost of everything is passed on to the customer base, the prices for most menu items are so high that the community they intend to serve cannot afford to eat there on a regular basis.

First I am hearing of this. Thanks for the info. Would have been nice to have some references though.

Thanks Ironhold. Like Tanj - to me it was a strange term. Before this I thought that 'woke' was what happened when you opened your eyes first thing in the morning and discovered that your leg was numb and you were dribbling.

Instead it's what I love most - yet another way of insulting people. :)

You think most of the students have experienced racism?
I think most minorities have yes.
I lived as a minority for only 4.5 years and I had probably about 4 instances of it that I understood. I don't doubt it for a second actually.

Probably because most of them Have experienced racism before and their stories are true. So they would assume other people's stories of racism are true.

how many white college professors have experienced racism in a bakery before?

Or perhaps people in general prefer to eat meat in their diet and those that do not wish to consume meat in any form represent such a small percentage of the pubic that the market for completely vegan restaurants is infinitesimally small and therefore unprofitable.

Gibson’s Bakery awarded more than $11 million in years-long legal battle with Oberlin College

So here's what happened....

A Bakery that is family owned and well established amongst the college community and on the other side, Oberlin College is a very proudly liberal college that prides itself on being progressive.

One day a black male student decided to try and stuff a couple of bottles of wine under his shirt, and purchase some items with a fake ID. The white owners of the bakery see this guy coming a mile away, and the son of the owner chases the black guy as he flees out the front door (with the stolen goods I think). The owner's son, who is white, tackles the thief...but unbeknownst to him, the thief had two friends waiting for him outside. The three black students proceed to beat the owner's son...and get arrested.

From what I understand, they then started spreading rumors about the Bakery being racist and profiling black customers (yes, even though they were robbing the place). The heavily liberal college community grabbed onto these accusations and ran with them....essentially forming very large protests with the intent of denying the Bakery any business and driving the racist family that owned it out of town (yes, even though they aren't actually racist). These protests included administration for the college and professors who were obviously trying to virtue signal as hard as they possibly could.

Eventually, the protests died down when the robbers accepted a plea deal where they admitted to guilt and admitted that racism had nothing to do with the incident. Oberlin College tried to reform its customer relationship with the Bakery....but the Bakery decided to sue the college for all the profits they lost and hardship they endured.

The Bakery won the case...there was clear evidence that they were financially harmed by the allegations of racism and protests...and they were awarded 11$ million dollars.

Thoughts? Any idea why so many students and professors (supposedly educated people) would just believe accusations of racial profiling and racism?

Some people jump onboard with these protests, because it is acceptable and encouraged by their particular ideology, regardless of what the facts may be.

The idiocy of many internet users has nothing to do with race or politics.

I am constantly amazed how many people think that you can defame a business or a person (especially online) and suffer no repercussions. "Because I heard someone else say they were xxxx" won't stand up in court.

Good on them for suing - it's just a pity they didn't go further and chase down individual students, but it's a start.

As an educator, I am highly aware of the social and political thinking and conversations that occur on campuses. Most conversations are liberal but, there are many conservative leaning opinions that do not get expressed for a multiplicity of reasons. Mostly, people want to be on the side of justice. But, people often jump to conclusions. It happens on the left and the right. It is human nature to advocate for your team and see the other side as the oppressing force--just read Breitbart.

The problem is not the left as much as it is out tendency to tribal-ize ourselves.
