Pope Francis finally approved the changes he has long wanted to implement to the Lord's Prayer by replacing "lead us not into temptation" with "do not let us fall into temptation," reports UCatholic.

"On May 22nd during the General Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Italy, President Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti announced the approval of a third edition of the Messale Romano," reports the outlet. The revised translation will include changes to the Lord’s Prayer and Gloria. The Lord’s Prayer will change from 'and lead us not into temptation' to 'do not let us fall into temptation.'"

Pope Francis first spoke of his desire to update the "lead us not into temptation" part of the Lord's Prayer, arguing that it portrays God in a false light. "A father does not lead into temptation, a father helps you to get up immediately," the Pope said at the time.

"It is not a good translation because it speaks of a God who induces temptation," he added.

SIGH... if true that's a sad conclusion he has drawn. The son of God was allowed to be tempted while fasting and in a weakened state... God allowed this. I mean... just read Job!? The verse in Greek is literally, "bring/lead/carry us not into temptation/proving." I admit, we often lose some things in translation... but this isn't losing anything. This is deliberately changing something because your own view can't reconcile what is written? I don't know how this isn't a sin!

How is this any different from the multiple of various Bible translations and biblical interpretations that are available? Do you know how many Bible translations in English BibleGateway.com provides?

Even Luther's Small Catechism had to make a statement about this petition

The Sixth Petition
And lead us not into temptation.
What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.

This is something I’ve wondered about for a pretty long time now. Translating an ancient language into a modern one is more of an art than a science so the Holy Father’s recommendation works as well as anything.

lord have mercy upon us all!

(I cannot comprehend how in the world this is going to go over at mass, because there is mass every day of the week, rosary every day, bible studies and so much more.....really?!)

does he expect all of us to just up and change the words of jesus?

ken, maybe you can pm me or something, but I am confused often by whether or not god himself tempts us or causes us to fall or to suffer? so many say its not god but the devil that does that to us...but this op has me thinking about this topic...there is probably a thread about it somewhere.

lets not derail the op....just pm me with ideas. thoughts

How many persons do you think know Greek?

I agree with the change.
Persons (catholics) that don't study were always confused by this...especially kids.

AND, it doesn't change anything basic.
It's just more theologically understandable to everyone.

Pope Francis is correct because James 1:13-14 clearly states that God does not tempt us.

LOL, you aren’t gonna be like one of those old folks still saying “And also with you” and throwing everyone else off are you?

someone mentioned job, so god did hurt him with the full intention of him being harmed to see if he would deny god?

I better leave this thread for now and pray, bc I'm too upset.

Thank you @redleghunter for a very interesting OP
