To Those Who Are Willing to Hear:
John 3:16 has to be read in light of John 3:19-21.
John 3:20 says that all who do evil hate the light and neither comes to the light unless his deeds are reproved.
John 5:24 says,
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
This means that we have to HEAR (obey) His Word in order to have everlasting life (See Luke 10:25-28, and Matthew 19:17-19).
For Jesus says that the one who does not receive His words, those words will judge them on the last day (See John 12:48).
So if one does not receive the words of Jesus that say if you do not forgive, you will not be forgiven (Matthew 6:15), these words will judge them. If one does not receive the words of Jesus on Matthew 25:31-46 to help the poor, we can be punished in everlasting fire.
Jesus says the same thing in John 8:47. He that is of God hears God's words.
1 John 3:10 says,
"In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother."
So belief is more than just having a belief in the person of Jesus for salvation, but belief would include believing in the teachings of Jesus. For Jesus said, why do you call me Lord, Lord if you do not what I say? (See Luke 6:46).
