Missouri legislator booed for comment about "consensual rape."

A Missouri state lawmaker was met with hisses when he used the phrase “consensual rape” during a highly charged House debate on a bill that would ban abortions at eight weeks, including in cases of rape and incest.

Republican Rep. Barry Hovis, of Cape Girardeau, said in the chamber Friday that most of the sexual assaults he handled before retiring from law enforcement weren’t strangers “jumping out of the bushes” but instead “date rapes or consensual rapes.”

In the old days, when a politician spoke, someone usually had the foresight to bring eggs and tomatoes.

I'm curious as to what the excuses will be this time by those who believe that an R next to a person's name is the equivalent to the mark of God.

As much as I don't like conservatism (with the exception of the abortion issue), I don't equate all Republicans to believe the same on important social and political issues as I don't equate all liberals to believe exactly the same on important social and political issues. Yes, this particular Republican is dead wrong on what he said, but I don't think lumping all Republicans with him is a fair assumption.

But I didn't say "all Republicans". I stated "those who believe...." My comment here really isn't so much about abortion as about the irony that a politician with an R next to his or her name can say all sorts of terrible things and be literally glorified for it (as I fully expect will happen from the same crowd that glorifies Trump), but change that letter to a D and it would be completely different!

I think he obviously misspoke ...

But there is some nuance here that should be addressed. What do we call it when a woman consents because she's "afraid" of what might happen if she doesn't? Let's say there's no threats of violence or retribution of any sort...she's just afraid it might turn that way.

I don't think it's rape....but apparently many people do.
