When Jesus said let your yes be yes and your no be no is a strong suggestion and not an absolute.

There are judges in the book of judges who didn't follow this principle. The three wise men who sought Jesus didn't follow this principle. If you are protecting your children from potential predators or violent people you wouldn't follow this principle.

....

Presidents and some people in power can't follow this principle.
Lying is extremely dangerous in terms of the eternal but lying and stretching the truth are not the same thing.

The first chapter of Proverbs attests to this.

We all stretch the truth all day long but lying is extremely dangerous for our eternity.

If we lie we should repent as soon as we get a chance and we should almost never lie if ever lie.

I think that principle that Christ taught in that passage was in line with the wisdom of proverbs 10:19, which says, "In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise."

It's a fact that the more words we speak, the greater chance we have to sin, because as James teaches, the tongue is a great evil.

I don't even think its possible in this modern world to always have your yes be yes and your no be no.
I've been working in Restaurants and retail for the past couple of years and i find people who think the customer is always right are in some ways forcing these workers to drastically stretch the truth or straight up lie. Its sheer snobbery and a huge problem with the world today.

Jesus said to be as wise as a serpent and as gentle as a dove for he sends us out among wolves.

Only time will tell.

With all things in the world, friend, a Christian must practice discernment. Our goal should always be to speak the truth in love uncompromisingly, using as little speech as possible to do so, so that we may bring into subjection our tongue for the use of edification. After all, how easy it is for the heart of a man to be drawn away by the influence of another, whether directly or indirectly. Ultimately, I find the point to be a matter of "self-control" as opposed to saying only yes or no in a given conversation.

It pains me to see you label all Christians as liars.
Why would anything Jesus say be a suggestion?
If you can't answer a question honestly, say NOTHING!!!

You said "we all stretch the truth all day long..." in the OP.
There is no difference between lying and stretching the truth.
And I see nothing in Proverb 1 to indicate there is.

I looked for a verse in the Bible about how we should measure our words but i didn't find one. I would argue if a person lowers himself spiritually and gets married that that person will have to stretch the truth (not lie).

Here's a "word" for you..."But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." (Matt 5:7)
Why would marriage constitute "lowering oneself spiritually"?
You don't think marriage can be conducted honestly?

When one "stretches the truth" once, how many more times will that "stretch" be manifested by the listeners and those to whom the "stretch" ripples out to?
It is like leaven.
