"Alabama’s state Senate passed a controversial bill on Tuesday that would outlaw nearly all abortions in the state and make performing one a felony unless the mother’s health is at risk.

The bill will make the punishment for performing abortions up to 99 years or life in prison, although the woman who received one will not be subject to a felony charge.

The vote is expected to reignite a debate over Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision from 1973 that legalized abortion across the nation, and push Supreme Court justices to re-evaluate the laws.

"The heart of this bill is to confront a decision that was made by the courts in 1973 that said the baby in a womb is not a person," Republican state Rep. Terri Collins said in April.

Although the Alabama State House voted to pass the bill last month, 74-3, Democratic lawmakers pressed Tuesday, unsuccessfully, for amendments that would create exceptions in instances of rape and incest.

"You don't have to raise that child. You don't have to carry that child. You don't have to provide for that child. And yet you want to make that decision," Democratic state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures said.

Figures also suggested amendments that would make it a felony for a man to have a vasectomy, and another to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act; both were struck down by lawmakers in a 21-11 vote.

"The issue that that decision was made on ... is that the baby in the womb is a person," state Rep. Terri Collins, who sponsored the bill, said on Tuesday.

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey has not confirmed whether she will sign the measure into law, but during the 2018 midterms, 59 percent of voters expressed their support for a bill banning abortions in the state."

What do you think? Could this be the beginning of the repeal of Roe V. Wade?

After fleefully stacking the courts, the republicans might just get their wish.

I hope they do and abortions become outlawed in the USA. This would not only increase human suffering, but democrats should root for it as well, because then the republicans will need to find a new issue to rally their voters behind.

Prepare yourselves for abortion tourism. This is just one less reason to live in Alabama.
Meh, prepare for a Supreme Court case at most .

However if they get their wish and Roe goes away I anxiously await their next step of forbidding pregnant women from travel to states where abortion is legal or prosecution upon their return.

It is like banning the symptoms of chicken pox, and saying that there is no more chicken pox when it does nothing to cure or slow the disease.

If they bother to work on the reasons for abortion they would have more success in stopping it. But that is to hard, and it requires their child to learn about sex and sexual relations. Much easier to pound their chest and ban it then to work the real problem.

A lot of people say this, but I don't see it. It'll just be, "Vote Republican or the dirty Dems will bring back abortion!".

Just another way to work over poor people. Middle class & wealthy women will get the services they need without worry. Poor women will have children they can't afford while social services are cut, so the wealthy have people to look down on.

The smug supporters of this bill should read the history prior to Roe Vs Wade. Women with means weren't hampered at all.

Hmm, I wonder how many suicides we'll see because a woman just doesn't want to live if she has to have that child or have her pregnancy made public? How many women will die of sepsis or hemorrhage because of a botched illegal procedure? How many private doctors in private hospitals will see a significant uptick in D&C's?

(FYI - a D&C basically cleans out a woman's uterus - great cover for an early term abortion.)

Oh, and what about the therapeutic abortions currently performed because an unknown fetus was exposed to something harmful or because the pregnant woman needs medical care that is not recommend during pregnancy? So if diagnosed with cancer- just suck it up? If you had intense imaging to diagnose some problem before you test pregnant or you were on meds harmful to 1st trimester fetuses - just cross your fingers?

This is a stupid law that has no one's health in mind.

No, I think it will just cause pregnant women to abort in more liberal states. Until this gets over turned.
The next campaign will be to criminalise people moving to other states for abortions.
