Why would a person claim that all sins are equal?

It would be nice if they were not equal......For instance a pedophile gets the same punishment that a person who steals a candy bar ......
The wages of any sin is death.

Not all actually:

1Jn 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

Yes. The ones we can repent of will not end in death.
But we are "due the same" wages for all of them,
though Jesus pays the price, if we accept it.

Yes, some sins are more serious than others.
1 Jn 5:16,17 says, "If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray."
