The chairman of the House Progressive Caucus, Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, went to Tijuana, Mexicoand joined the caravan of migrants who traveled from Central America.

The congresswoman arrived in Tijuana on Friday after saying that she was going there because she wanted to see first-hand the conditions asylum seekers face at the border.

Jayapal joined the group of weary travelers on Saturday afternoon as they entered the U.S. and applied for asylum so they could remain in the United States.

“When I read the report about a week ago that kids and moms were being tear gassed, I just couldn’t sleep,” Jayapal said on Saturday. “I want to go see for myself what is happening, what happens to asylum seekers as they get to the border, how are they turned back, what’s happening to them in between, where the conditions in which they’re living.”

The congresswoman’s office issued a statement Saturday saying that Jayapal had gone to Tijuana in order to meet with asylum seekers.

“She hopes to meet with asylum seekers to hear their stories and observe conditions on the ground. She hopes to bring this back to the American people and her colleagues and highlight the ongoing crisis and the US government’s contribution to what’s happening,” Jayapal’s statement read.

Later on Saturday, Jayapal tweeted that she helped a group of migrants in the area, including a man suffering from a “serious medical condition,” avoid detention “in violation of of U.S. and international law,” and then witnessed their applications for asylum.

"I was able to successfully assist 5 asylum seekers - 2 unaccompanied minors, a mother and her 9 year old child, and a young man with a serious medical condition - into the United States."

Twitter

“It shouldn’t take intervention from a Member of Congress and an incredibly compassionate Border Patrol Chief for those fleeing violence and persecution to seek asylum in the United States,” Jayapal also tweeted.

“I will continue to do everything I can to return our country to one that upholds decency, compassion and human rights,” the Washington state Democrat added.

Jayapal is an up-and-coming leader among House Democrats. She is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, and also co-founder of the House Medicare for All Caucus.

She told reporters on Saturday that she plans to present her findings to the Judiciary Committee. She said she will ask the committee to examine the use of tear gas against migrants last week by U.S. border patrol officers.

“We’re going to dive into all of that because this is a central role of the Judiciary Committee, to have oversight on these issues, to make sure we’re in line with our Constitution and our internal human rights obligations,” she said. “We’re in violation of that on a number of fronts as far as immigrants go.”

Widely publicized images last week showed asylum-seekers, including women and small children, running from tear gas fired by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents. This resulted once again in widespread criticism of the Trump administration for its harsh and probably illegal treatment of asylum seekers.

President Trump defended the deployment of tear gas against migrantsthis week, calling the substance used at the border a “minor form” of the gas.

“First of all, the tear gas is a very minor form of the tear gas itself. It’s very safe,” Trump told reporters.

“But you really say, why is a parent running up into an area where they know the tear gas is forming? And it’s going to be formed and they’re running up with a child,” he added.

By going to the border and meeting with migrants seeking asylum in the United States, Pramila Jayapal has once again proven her commitment to doing the right thing. Our country would be much better off if every member of Congress was equally committed to following not only the laws, but also the ideals, of the United States of America.

Early this morning Jayapal posted a video on Twitter in which she describes her experiences in more detail. “Last night I went on Facebook Live to share what I saw at the border,” she said.

It's not hard to figure out. JFK and all presidents following him welcomed Cuban refugees because it was the decent thing to do. And because they detested the government from which the refugees were fleeing. Each president believed in America and saw the Cubans as future Americans, who would strengthen our country.

Trump fears and hates the refugees from central America, because he identifies with the governments there, and because decency is entirely alien to him.

And he does not regard anyone who differs from him, to be an American.

Good question. Under Obama, the Department of State began projects to reduce violence in Central American nations.
"We do this work because it is the right thing to do. But more to the point, we do this work as an Agency contributing to national security – our programs contribute to a safer and more prosperous United States by helping to secure our borders, protect our citizens, and increase economic and business opportunities. In addition, evidence suggests it helps mitigate the conditions that drive migrants to make the perilous trip north." Administrator Mark Green
Central America Strategy

I don't know if Jayapal would have supported these initiatives or not. Recently, I saw a video on how USAID had succeeded in greatly reducing violence in neighborhoods where certain programs were implemented. But there just wasn't money for country-wide implementation. The efforts, targeting young men who are the recruits and foot soldiers for the gangs were highly successful.

But Trump has decided that this money isn't a good idea. Hopefully, the program won't be cut entirely. Keeping those neighborhoods safe and moving on to new neighborhoods would go a long way toward reducing refugees.

Similar programs in Mexico reduced immigration from Mexico to the United States. As Mexico begins to prosper, people stay there. I don't know if this freshman representative would agree, but I suspect that she does.

Don't know. As I said, the major thing America has been doing is a very limited, albeit successful program to reduce violence. I don't know if she supported that or not, but I suppose she does. As a member of the House committee on immigration, she's actively supported efforts to restore order and reason to immigration policy.

Given the mess that the government is in right now, it hasn't done much good.

Maybe we can ship all the Democrats to Mexico

Or all the republicans to Russia. It would be cheaper because their are fewer of them, and at least they'd be happier in that kind of a political system.

It seems that this would be her major concern/issue (the issues the caravan(s) allegedly are "fleeing" from) since she is a member of the House committee on Immigration, even BEFORE deciding to go to Tijuana.

Since she has supported the USAID programs, I would say you're right. But then, she did.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal seems to be leading the way for Democrats to do an exodus to Mexico. It simply comes to mind since the Rep has already gone there.

Perhaps more Democrats should follow.

I don't think democrats would like it. The Mexican government has a unique Gerrymandering scheme whereby political parties can bypass elections entirely and just appoint a certain number of representatives to the legislature. Republicans should love it; it takes away the power of citizens even more effectively than real Gerrymandering.

We should start a pilot program, deporting only alt-right white nationalists, and if it works, we could then deport all the republicans.

Yep. But until the adults assume control of the House next year, it won't go anywhere.

The Barbarian, is (or has) Rep. Pramila Jayapal met with the leaders of those countries?

She's actually at the border, where the refugees are. Which makes sense, if you want to see who they are, and what's going on with them.
