I think Jesus was pretty plain when he said give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's.

As a cop I was held to a higher standard and held to standards and scrutiny the average citizen did not have to deal with. Priests and Deacons and any Church Official are, also, IMO. It is a good thing if a priest repents and confesses and turns away from his sin but this is only half the issue in a crime like sexual impurity. I would like to hear one word as yet about the victims out of all of this, and some concern. The victims number more than the literal one violated, these men have violated trust, they have violated the Church and they were party to opening the door for the present onslaught of attacks in the press and world from those who hate us no matter what we do anyway.

Internal punishments need to treat this as severe matters. They must also deal with the victims and address that issue, despite the fact that some of them are fraudulent claims and still, no matter what is done there will be criticism. The focus has to be on healing within the Body and changing in how such things are dealt with.

It is depravity to harm another person this way and all the worse when done beneath the cloak of authority and trust. If they will not repent and submit they need to go.

Let Caesar handle his bit. Not all the accused are guilty. Changes need to be made and protection needs to be stopped when it crosses the line into obstruction. The scandalous revelations of hundreds of victims was from what? 30 or 50 years of claims? Most of that is lost to the courts now, but the crime is the hiding and the same names coming up over and over, which is enabling. If you hide and enable you are as guilty, maybe even more, as you do not have the illness it is of the soul and mind the perp does.

We also need to see that claims have dropped sharply over the last decade so there is more awareness and pray God, more internal policing going on. I know in the diocese I am taking RCIA in, there have been homilies, ads in the bulletins and notices up on how to report and it is quite clear our Bishop is not going to play around if anything of the sort crops up here, and I applaud that.

Anyway, JMO. Everybody has one at least :)
