Question by unbeliever
When did Mary Magdelene first meet the resurrected Jesus? And how did she react?
He/she pointed out that story in Matthew and in John are contradicting each other .

Matthew 28 King James Version (KJV)
28 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

John 20 King James Version (KJV)
20 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.

4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,

7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.

9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

There are the arguments
    • Mary and the other women met Jesus on their way back from their first and only visit to the tomb. They took hold of his feet and worshipped him (Matthew 28:9)
    • On her second visit to the tomb Mary met Jesus just outside the tomb. When she saw Jesus she did not recognize him. She mistook him for the gardener. She still thinks that Jesus body is laid to rest somewhere and she demands to know where. But when Jesus said her name she at once recognized him and called him Teacher. Jesus said to her, Do not hold me... (John 20:11 to 17)

All four gospel accounts disagree in some details...

Mary and/or the other women
saw at the empty tomb:
1 man
1 angel
2 men
2 angels

the "long ending" of Mark (16:9-20) differs slightly with what went before it -- through verse eight, Mary is with 2 other women - after verse nine, she alone confronts Jesus resurrected

These discrepancies are not really that big of a deal

in OT, sometimes an angel is called a man (like Jacob wrestling with one - it is also said he wrestled with God)

The "doubling" phenomenon is seen in NT -- one account has one Garasene Demoniac, another account has TWO

Reconciling differring gospel accounts is just something we deal with

The cleansing of the Temple/overturning tables of money changers -- John puts it quite early in Jesus ministry -- Synoptics have it in last week of His life; some people think it happenned TWICE

Christ has died - Christ is Risen - Christ will Come Again.

On deeper digging I found somebody who refuted that argument .

The angels told the women that Jesus had risen from the dead. Matthew, Mark and Luke are all clear on this. The apparent discrepancy regarding the number of angels is cleared up when we realize that there were two groups of women. Mary Magdalene and her group probably set out from the house of John Mark, where the Last Supper had been held. Joanna and some other unnamed women, on the other hand, probably set out from Herod's residence, in a different part of the city. Joanna was the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household (Luke 8:3) and it is therefore highly probable that she and her companions set out from the royal residence.

With this in mind, it is clear that the first angel (who rolled away the stone and told Mary and Salome where Jesus was) had disappeared by the time Joanna and her companions arrived. When they got there (Luke 24:3-8), two angels appeared and told them the good news, after which they hurried off to tell the apostles. In Luke 24:10, all the women are mentioned together, as they all went to the apostles in the end.

We are now in a position to see why Mary Magdalene did not see the angels. John 20:1 tells us that Mary came to the tomb and we know from the other accounts that Salome and another Mary were with her. As soon as she saw the stone rolled away, she ran to tell the apostles, assuming that Jesus had been taken away. The other Mary and Salome, on the other hand, satisfied their curiosity by looking inside the tomb, where they found the angel who told them what had happened. So we see that the angels did inform the women, but that Mary Magdalene ran back before she had chance to meet them.

It's not really an ARGUMENT that all four gospels disagree with each other on details of resurrection -- not a one agrees with any of the other three regarding angel/man/angels/men seen by Mary/women at the Tomb; and as I say - Mark 16:9-20 has Mary Magdalene ALONE whereas at verse eight she was accompanied by other women - many Bible scholars believe that Mark himself ends the gospel at verse eight, and 9-20 are added later by someone else.

Mat 28:1
In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Mat 28:2
And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

Mat 28:3
His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

Mat 28:4
And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

Mat 28:5
And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

Mat 28:6
He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Mat 28:7
And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

Mat 28:8
And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

Mat 28:9
And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

Such is Matthew's account, in which Mary Magdalene AND 'the other Mary' are together, the they still includes Mary Magdalene in Matthew's account of holding Him by the feet -- we will see in another gospel a variation to that.

Mar 16:1
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

Mar 16:2
And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

Mar 16:3
And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

Mar 16:4
And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

Mar 16:5
And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

Mar 16:6
And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

Mar 16:7
But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

Mar 16:8
And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

So ends 'the original ending' to Mark's gospel. Both Mary M. and the other Mary are together, just like in Matthew. The stone HAD BEEN ROLLED AWAY by the time the women got there -- in Matthew -- that is implied but not stated, as in Matthew it is the gaurds that see the angel/man, and are apparently stunned somehow into immobility.

Mar 16:9
Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

(in 16:2, Mark had already said THEY came to tomb, both Marys and others)

Mar 16:10
And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

(Here we have Mary Magdalene acting solo)

Mar 16:11
And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

Mar 16:12
After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

(This alludes to the two on the road to Emmaus, described in another gospel.)

Mar 16:13
And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

Mar 16:14
Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

(this appearance seems to include Thomas -- 'the eleven' -- so this ending of Mark does not mention the appearance when Thomas was absent)

Luk 23:55
And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

Luk 23:56
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

Luk 24:1
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

(In 24:1 is some justification for the 'two groups of women idea' mentioned in what Chincilla posted earlier)

Luk 24:2
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

(Again, the stone is already rolled away when women arrive.)

Luk 24:3
And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

Luk 24:4
And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

(this time it says TWO MEN -- but their apparel and message is same as angel(s) in other gospels)

Luk 24:5
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

Luk 24:6
He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

Luk 24:7
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

Luk 24:8
And they remembered his words,

Luk 24:9
And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

Luk 24:10
It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

(By saying 'other women', after already naming THREE of them, that should put it to five women at a minimum)

YESHUA rose from the dead at Night, In the Dark - John 20:1

All Biblical days begin in the Evening, when the sun goes down, not at sunrise.

Early - After Sunset

YESHUA rose just after Sunset, The tomb was empty when Mary M arrived in the Dark, He had already been in the Tomb for 3 full days and 3 full nights.

YESHUA was Crucified on the fourth day of the week: Put in the tomb at the beginning of the 5th day ~ night and day - 6th day ~ night and day 7th day ~ night and day.

First-fruits: Leviticus 23:11 - Leviticus 23:15

He rose shortly after sunset.

The 5th day was the 1st day of Unleavened Bread. Leviticus 23:7 A Sabbath, Holy Convocation. Leviticus 23:2 His Sabbath and Appointed Times

Matthew 28:1

In the end of the Sabbath (7th day at Sunset), as it began to draw on G2020 toward the First of the Sabbaton - (Sabbath / First-fruits), came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. (day is not in the Greek)

Luke 23:54

And that day was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew on. G2020 Leviticus 23:7 no servile work

epiphōskō A Verb 2 times in 2 verses.

Substitute the word Dawn in Matthew 28:1 with the only other occurrence of the Greek word used in Luke 23:54 - " and the Sabbath dawn on - Does not make sense whatsoever.

The Sabbath just ended, Sunset, and early (1st watch) Mary comes to the Tomb

(Peter and John look around in the Tomb and then go home)

Jhn 20:11
But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

Jhn 20:12
And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

Jhn 20:13
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

Jhn 20:14
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

Jhn 20:15
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

Jhn 20:16
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

Jhn 20:17
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

Jhn 20:18
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

Mary Magdalene is the EARLY BIRD - encountering the risen Lord before He has ascended - causing Him to say "Don't touch me" - but later, all the woman hold His feet.

The accounts are not really CONTRADICTORY, rather they give different pieces at different times.

I am 100% familiar with what the lexicons say.

But if you are honest, you can not say that the Sabbath begins at Dawn as would be the case if it means what they say it means. ... Every English translation is bias against the Hebrew understanding of the scriptures... The Word Day is not in the Greek

Literally says: " Mia First - of the - Sabbath

First of the Sabbath

It was the first day of the counting of the Omer Leviticus 23:15 A Holy Convocation Sabbath

In Acts of the Apostles 20:7 (same Greek construction as in Matthew 28:1

And upon the First of the Sabbath, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

This day was the first Sabbath of the counting of the Omer - Which is counted for 7 Sabbaths. Leviticus 23:15

Paul hopes to be back to Jerusalem, by the End of the Seven Weeks, to Keep Pentecost in Jerusalem

The First day of the Counting of the Omer is A Sabbath, Paul is still keeping the counting of the Omer in Acts of the Apostles 20:16

If someone does not know His Appointed Times, His Calendar, then they can not understand.

SonofZion -- it's fine with me if Jesus rose in the dark -- I don't care if it was an hour after sunset, midnight or two in the morning.

Thing the Bible is clear on is Jesus was GONE before the next morning - out of the Tomb.

Mary Magdalene seems really GUNG HO to me, I can see her chompin' at the bit to go to the Tomb at the earliest possible moment - pacing around late Saturday afternoon - dashing off as the sun sets...

If indeed this was a "regular sabbath" -- I have heard it proposed of being a "special sabbath" -- that is beyond me. But I will check again for "day" in the Greek, I think you are right that it is not there.

I studied Greek -- Greek I can deal with -- I am woefully ignorant of Hebrew, Aramaic and many 'things Jewish' that Messianic brethren are familiar with.

All four gospel writers use mia sabbaton (First of the Sabbath) -- translated into English as a phrase -- 'first day of the week'; in all English versions I find except except Darby.

It is true that the Greek word for 'day' (hemera) is not used in these Tomb passages.

Luke adds the phrase 'very early in the morning'

Luk 24:1
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre

Again -- this is about when the women arrive, says nothing about when Jesus first arose.

Jhn 20:1

So there ya go -- still dark when Mary M. comes to Tomb - Jesus is already gone.

It is best to not add or take away from what was Inspired, The translators bias is that they only understood scriptures through Greek eyes, linear thought, and not through Hebrew eyes, called "block logic"

They added and subtracted accordingly

Here is a another example..

Hebrews 4:9

In the KJV "Sabbatismos" is Translated simply as "rest"

When it literally means "Keeping Sabbath" The EASV - Almost got it Right, but not quite

How the Holy Spirit Inspired the Text

Heb 4:9 There remains therefore a Keeping SABBATH for the people of Elohim

Isaiah 58:13-14 Speaking His Words, riding upon the High places of the earth.

Keep It and find out, the mouth of YHWH has spoken it. Set-Apart and Blessed from the beginning.

Psalms 78:1-2 In parables to those that know not the Torah Matthew 13:35

YESHUA was and Is a Torah Teacher 1 John 2:27

Those that forsake the Torah, perish for lack of knowledge Hosea 4:6 and have no possibility of being a Kingdom Priest in the Millennium.

6 days, 6 thousand years of the kingdoms of this world

7th day, The Millennial reign, Those that keep the Sabbath will reign with Him.

By Keeping the Sabbath, they are a Shadow of things to come, His poem being written in them.

Thayers did get this right in his dictionary, as "Sabbath Keeping" and the Bible in basic English.

The Institute for Scripture Research also translate the Greek word “sabbatismos” correctly as “Sabbath observance.” which is the same as Keeping, observing.

How could have the Almighty made it more clear?

Well, getting back to Mary Magdalene and the OP -- I notice that the whole thread may have been started in response to some 'unbelievers' claim that two gospels contradicted each other -- I doubt that anyone but serious Bible students have a handle on all the seeming discrepancies that don't make a hill of beans to us, but that might cause some unbeliever to say

"SEE THIS? THE BIBLE IS WRONG -- BLAH BLAH BLAH!!"
